Something else from our friends in Sidmouth. This podcast about their mural project is a really interesting listen. We’d love to hear any ideas for community-led projects to use the Pound Square chapel or its garden in creative new ways.

In the latest episode of the People So Bold podcast, Ann talks to Gav Howell and Lesley Emery, two of the collaborators for the mural project at the Dissenter of Sidmouth, a Unitarian Chapel and community centre. Very inspiring to hear how a small congregation worked with local artists to beautify their building and strengthen connections to the local area. This project involved a huge amount of organic community building that has already formed ripples in the form a new play by Lesley on the Unitarian suffragist Annie Leigh Brown.

“As a minority faith tradition, Unitarians are less well known than we deserve to be. Of those who have heard of us, many have an outdated or erroneous picture. Many more may never have heard of us at all. This is a shame. In a culture where many are looking once more to life’s spiritual dimension, Unitarians offer something unique.”

This is part of the opening passage from a very informative article we came across on the website of our friends at The Old Meeting Unitarian Chapel Sidmouth.

It’s not always easy to explain, or understand, what Unitarianism is, and what Unitarians do and don’t believe. If you’re curious, this article is a good place to start.

And if you’d like to see for yourself, we meet on the first Sunday of the month at 3pm. Our next service will be Sunday 2nd February and everyone is very welcome.

These words are from a poster in our entranceway and might be useful for anyone seeking to understand a bit more about Unitarianism:

This church welcomes all who seek the meaning of life.

It has a respect for Christian tradition coupled with a modern religious outlook which encourages freedom of individual thought.

It welcomes all who believe that religion is wider than any one sect and deeper than any one set of opinions.

It seeks exploration of all possible truths from all possible sources.
