⚔️ More Than Just Colours: 5 Things You Need to Know About Hola Mohalla ⚔️
While the world celebrates Holi, the Khalsa celebrates Hola Mohalla—a tradition of strength, skill, and spirit started by Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
Here’s the lowdown on why this festival is a cornerstone of our identity:
1. The "Sikh Olympics": Established in 1701 at Anandpur Sahib, Guru Ji created Hola Mohalla to ensure the Khalsa remained battle-ready. It was (and is!) a time for mock battles, archery, and wrestling.
2. "Hola" vs "Holi": Guru Ji shifted the focus from the playfulness of Holi to the "charge of an army" (Hola). It’s about transitioning from passive celebration to active preparation. 🛡️
3. Mastery of Gatka: If you’ve seen the incredible weapon displays at Anandpur Sahib, that’s the heart of Hola Mohalla. It’s a showcase of Shastar Vidya (the science of weapons) and physical prowess.
4. Poetry & Spirit: It’s not all muscle! Guru Ji also held poetry competitions. The goal was to nourish the mind and soul just as much as the body—true Sant-Sipahi (Saint-Soldier) energy.
5. Chardi Kala Vibes: The festival ends with a massive military-style procession. It’s a reminder for us to always live in "Chardi Kala"—eternal optimism and high spirits, no matter the odds.
Let’s keep that legacy alive right here in Crawley. Whether you’re practicing your Gatka or just coming for the Langar, let’s celebrate the strength of our community!
Happy Hola Mohalla from everyone at Siri Guru Singh Sabha, Crawley! 🦁💙
