At the start of the school year, members of the diocesan Education Service spent time reflecting on the Feeding of the 5,000 and its relationship to their work in education, and to the mission of all who work in our schools.

Christ does not ask the disciples to perform the miracle. He asks them to offer what they have and to trust him with it. That is our invitation too: our work depends upon people bringing their particular gifts and placing them at the service of something greater than themselves. No single person carries that mission alone.

This year, may we become for one another something of those five loaves and two fish: small offerings which, placed in Christ's hands, can become more than we imagine.

Today is the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation.

In his message to mark the day, Pope Leo highlights the connection between armed conflict and environmental degradation. Such degradation constitutes both a serious violation of our duty to care for creation, as well as a long-term threat to the lives of hundreds of millions of people.

Hundreds of our 2026 Lourdes pilgrims are gathered at Worth Abbey today for Mass, to thank God for all the blessings received in Lourdes and to reminisce together.

We pray that the fruits of their pilgrimage will be shared with the whole Diocese, deepening our faith and bringing us all, like Our Lady and St Bernadette, to complete trust in the Lord and openness to whatever He may ask of us.

Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. The Assumption reminds us that our true home is with God. In every trial and uncertainty, Mary points us towards the hope of heaven. From her place in glory, she watches over us with a mother's love, bringing comfort and reassurance. Trusting in her care, we continue our journey with confidence, knowing that Christ is leading us towards eternal life.

Today, we celebrate the Feast of St Maximilian Kolbe, who reminds us that true discipleship is rooted in self-giving love. His willingness to endure suffering sprang from complete trust in Christ and a desire to serve others. We may never face such sacrifice, but we are called each day to offer compassion and generosity to those in need. By putting others before ourselves, we become witnesses to the Gospel and bearers of God's hope.

Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

We pray that all the faithful of our Diocese will experience a moment of transfiguration, where they see Christ's glory revealed. May this revelation inspire them to bring the Good News of Christ's life, death and resurrection to everyone they meet. Amen.
