St Nicolas Church Cranleigh

St Nicolas Church Cranleigh Welcome! We are a church in and for Cranleigh, see www.stnicolascranleigh.org.uk for more info! About 1340 a new chancel was built.

St Nicolas Church is the Church of England parish Church in Cranleigh, Surrey, UK. There has been a church on the site since 1170, At first just a simple rectangle occupying the area of the present nave, it was enlarged later in the 12th century by the addition of side aisles and the tower. During the 1860s a clergy vestry and a new porch were built. In 1911 a choir vestry was added. Today, the C

hurch offers different styles of worship, where all are welcome. We believe that all can grow in faith, learn, celebrate and worship in whatever way suits them. As a Church, we represent all ages and all stages of life. We encourage those of different ages to interact with and learn from each other. We provide lots of opportunities for families, children and young people to meet and socialise. As a Church, we are not just about Sundays or Services. St Nicolas is a meeting place, a welcoming, engaging environment, providing friendship, support. . You will recieve a warm welcome and we look forward to seeing or hearing from you.

Would you like to discuss and explore with others what the Christian faith means? At St Nicolas we're this week starting a short 6-session course (ON THURSDAY EVENINGS 8PM or SATURDAY MORNINGS 11AM) using the Bible and the Apostles' Creed (a summary of the Christian faith used for the last 1800(!) years) to explore the big questions of life and what Christianity has to say about it (clue: the answer does include Jesus). Everyone is very welcome. Though if you haven’t been baptised and/or confirmed yet, there is the opportunity to receive make a public commitment to the Christian faith and become part of the Church at the end in a service of Baptism and Confirmation on the 31st of May at 10am at St Nicolas Church.

Both groups start this week (23rd and 25th April), and are of course entirely free! Please do contact Erik ([email protected]) for any questions and further details.

It was great to join with the churches of Cranleigh at Stocklund Square for our Good Friday Act of Witness!

In the first century BC the gladiator Spartacus started a rather impressive rebellion against Roman oppression. When he was eventually defeated, he and 6000 others were crucified along the Via Appia, the main street into Rome – the equivalent to Cranleigh High Street, just on a slightly bigger scale. The cross was an instrument of torture and a sign of Roman oppression. No one would ever dream of linking hope and victory to this shameful instrument. Let alone hang it up in places of worship, around necks, tattoo it on arms, or make this sign over ourselves or others as a way of blessing, right?

If we are today shocked and repulsed by the gruesomeness of Jesus on the cross, it may help us to think of people across the world going through horrendous pain and suffering. God doesn’t ignore horror. The cross tells us that God somehow makes something good out of it. God comes in the worst and darkest of human trauma, shares it, and changes it. It always strikes me that even the risen Jesus still has the wounds of the crucifixion on his hands, feet, and side. The scars are still there, yet somehow, changed into something glorious. Likewise, the worst wounds and scars that we carry with us, will one day be used by God to make something new and good.

Please do also join in the Easter celebrations in any of your local churches, you will be very welcome!
