Maundy Thursday marks a sacred moment in the Christian calendar, commemorating the Last Supper that Jesus shared with His disciples on the night before His crucifixion. It is a time of reflection, humility, and deep remembrance of Christ’s love and sacrifice.
During the service, we recall how Jesus gathered with His disciples in fellowship, knowing the suffering that lay ahead. In this intimate setting, He instituted the breaking of bread and the sharing of the cup, giving them new meaning. As He broke the bread, He said, “This is my body, given for you.” And as He shared the cup, He spoke of a new covenant sealed through His blood, poured out for the forgiveness of sins.
A central and powerful act of this night is the washing of feet. In a profound display of humility, Jesus knelt before His disciples and washed their feet—an act usually reserved for servants. Through this, He showed that true leadership is found in service and love. He then commanded His disciples to do likewise, reminding us that we are called to serve one another with humility and compassion.
The breaking of bread in the church today is a continuation of this sacred act. It is more than a ritual—it is a living remembrance. As we come forward, we are invited to reflect on Christ’s sacrifice, to examine our hearts, and to renew our commitment to love and serve one another, just as He commanded.
The word “Maundy” itself comes from the commandment Jesus gave: “Love one another as I have loved you.” This command is at the heart of all we do on this holy night.
As we gather to share in the bread and the cup, and as we witness or take part in the washing of feet, we do so in unity, gratitude, and reverence. We remember His humility, we proclaim His love, and we look forward in hope to the promise of resurrection.
May this sacred observance deepen our faith, strengthen our community, and draw us closer to the heart of Christ.
