Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who served as Supreme Pontiff from April 2005 to February 2013, has died aged 95, the Vatican has confirmed.

A short statement from Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See's Press Office, said: "With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34am in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican."

Archbishop Bernard Longley said: "I pray for the repose of the soul of His Holiness Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI as his long life of devoted service comes to a close. May he now enjoy forever the company of the saints and the reward of all the Lord's good and faithful servants.

"I recall with gratitude the warmth and impact of Pope Benedict's presence during his State Visit in 2010 and especially during his visit to Birmingham for the Beatification of Cardinal Newman. He showed us the love of the pastor's heart which had guided his ministry as priest, as bishop and as Supreme Pastor.

"I am grateful for the prayerful way that he supported his successor Pope Francis, continuing to promote the unity and mission of the Church.

"On behalf of the clergy, Religious and all the faithful of the Archdiocese of Birmingham I offer our condolences and pray that Emeritus Pope Benedict may rest in peace with his risen Lord."

Today is known as Good Shepherd Sunday because today's gospel reading is from John 10, which describes Christ as the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep, by dying on the Cross.

Today is also observed as a day of prayer for vocations. It is especially important to pray for vocations to the priesthood as priests are those who are called to share in the care of the Lord’s flock.

And yet ours were the sufferings he bore,
ours the sorrows he carried.
But we, we thought of him as someone punished,
struck by God, and brought low.
Yet he was pierced through for our faults,
crushed for our sins.
On him lies a punishment that brings us peace,
and through his wounds we are healed.

This evening we will begin the celebration of the Sacred Triduum with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7pm at Our Lady of Assumption, Tile Hill. At the end of mass the Blessed Sacrament will be taken from church to the Altar of Repose and our period of watching with the Lord will begin as we remember his agony in the garden. This will finish at 10pm with Night Prayer.

Today we begin our journey with the Lord through Holy Week.
Due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to change our plans for the Sacred Triduum and are now heading down to our sister parish of Our Lady of the Assumption in Tile Hill for all of the liturgies during these three sacred days.
Please see below for the times of our liturgies:
Holy Thursday - Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7pm followed by watching at the Altar of Repose until 10pm when we will celebrate Night Prayer.
Good Friday - Office of Readings and Morning Prayer at 9am
Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 3pm
Stations of the Cross at 6pm
Holy Saturday - Office of Readings and Morning Prayer at 10am
The Solemn Easter Vigil and First Mass of Easter at 6pm.
On Easter Sunday morning we will be back at St John Vianney for Easter morning mass at 9.30am.
We are very sorry to have to make this decision but we hope that you understand.
Have a good, prayerful and spiritual Holy Week.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY

Loving God, have mercy on your people, and open our hearts to peace and love. Reward all who have died for their country, and grant that all nations may continue to work for peace and justice. Bless us in your service, and help us to follow Jesus Christ, who is our Saviour and our Lord for ever and ever. Amen.

Almighty ever-living God,
who assumed the Immaculate Virgin Mary,
the Mother of your Son,
body and soul into heavenly glory,
grant, we pray,
that, always attentive to the things that are above,
we may merit to be sharers of her glory.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
