JCT AIMS TO BREAK THE CHAINS OF POVERTY, HOMELESSNESS AND DISTITUTION

Whenever possible, we help clients to access emergency accommodation and link them to partner agencies to help with issues such as drug and alcohol misuse, mental or physical ill-health, debt, employment, and legal aid.

There are six key aspects to our service that help us be client focused and responsive:

🫶We provide OISC immigration advice
🫶We provide immediate, quick, responsive crisis intervention to prevent rough sleeping
through the provision of hostels, Streetlink referrals and outreach teams
🫶 We help clients gain or retain housing through our specialist, bespoke, holistic support
to address the wider issues that keep people out of sustainable housing
🫶Our staff are trained in trauma-informed, strength-based practices with coproduction at
the heart of what we do
🫶 We are kind to people but professional at the same time

CELEBRATING THE CONTRIBUTIONS, CREATIVITY AND RESILIENCE OF PEOPLE SEEKING SANCTUARY!
What would happen if this Refugee Week we extended our warmth and hospitality beyond our own homes and made entire neighbourhoods more welcoming?... 'Simple Acts' are everyday actions we can all do to stand with refugees and make new connections in our communities.

🫶Watch a Film
There’s nothing quite as powerful as a story. Films can broaden our perspectives and deepen our understanding; by seeing the world through someone else’s eyes, we gain insight into their experiences and challenges, fostering compassion and inspiring positive action.

🫶Share the Message
Whether it’s using our platforms on social media, or having conversations with family, friends and colleagues. It is through relatively small interactions that we can all help create positive change and reshape the narrative surrounding displacement and make a more welcoming, safe, and sustainable home for all.

🫶Share a meal
Sharing food with others is a powerful symbol of love, care and connection. Food is perhaps the most powerful way to nurture relationships and celebrate cultures. Share/swap a favourite recipe
or learn a new dish!

HOW WE HELP PEOPLE
A clients story...

*Tasmeen was hospitalised for five months due to her mental health issues. After being discharged she found a pile of overdue debt letters and that all her utilities had been cut off
and her benefits had been stopped.

She came to JCT and said:
“I feel ashamed to ask for help as I don’t have anything, not even something to eat. Would you be able to give me a little something — a food voucher maybe?”

I reassured her and said she had nothing to be ashamed about and invited her to sit down and offered her a hot drink and some snacks. While she ate, she told me her issue and I advised her that I will contact her utility company and ask to put her on an instalment plan, to help manage her debts. I reassured her and explained to her that due to the cost-of-living crisis she was not the only one struggling. “We are struggling as well and so do not belittle yourself as you have nothing to be ashamed about”. She embraced me and kept thanking me for not judging her and appreciated just being able to have someone understand her.

VOLUNTEER FOR JCT AND BE A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY
JCT aims to break the chains of poverty, homelessness and destitution. We provide immigration advice and resolve benefits and documentation issues. Whenever possible, we help clients to access emergency accommodation and link them to partner agencies to help with issues such as drug and alcohol misuse, mental or physical ill-health, debt, employment, and legal aid.

As a small, local charity, JCT relies on volunteers to help the team make JCT run smoothly. From admin tasks to assisting at events, we value time given to JCT freely.
