Sharing the Church's Story
Father Paul attended the superb recent one day conference in Westminster on evangelisation called Sharing the Church's Story, organised by Catholic Voices, the Word on Fire Institute and other Catholic organisations. It was an amazingly inspiring day - lots of young (and older) Catholics on fire with love for the Faith (the Faith, the whole Faith and nothing but the Faith) and wanting to share it with others. Bishop Robert Barron, of Word on Fire, gave two excellent addresses, and other speakers gave attendees much heart that it is not inevitable that the Church declines and shrivels up in this country, but that there is hope for a Third Spring. The conference in itself, organised almost entirely by laypeople, is evidence that it's already happening.

Ordinariate clergy retreat to Bergamo
Last week a group of Ordinariate clergy and wives made a retreat in Bergamo in northern Italy, in the St John XXIII seminary. Father Marcus Holden led the retreat brilliantly for us on The Way of the English Priest, reflecting on the lives and lessons of St Augustine of Canterbury, St. Bede, St. Edmund Campion, St. Thomas Becket and St. John Henry Newman. Much to reflect on and bring to bear on our ministries back home. One of the photos shows Mgr Newton, the last surviving niece of Pope St. John XXIII (who was born near to Bergamo and attended the seminary), Fr Marcus Holden, and the parish priest of the parish where John XXIII was born and said his first Mass. Plug for Bergamo, overlooked by most tourists to northern Italy, it is a gem of a place, especially the elevated and fortified upper city where we stayed. Thanks to Fr Marcus and all involved in organising an excellent retreat.

The Death of Pope Emeritus Benedict
It was with great sadness that we heard of the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict during Mass this morning. For those of us who were drawn to the Catholic Church in no small measure because of him, as theologian and pope, we have so much to thank God for. He was an outstanding theologian, Pastor, and life-long servant of the Church. We pray that the Lord will be merciful to him and grant him the reward of a good and faithful servant.

O GOD, who of thy ineffable providence didst vouchsafe to number thy servant Pope Benedict in the company of thy high Priests: grant, we beseech thee; that as he did fulfil on earth the office of thine Only Begotten Son, he may be numbered in the everlasting fellowship of thy holy Pontiffs; through the same Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Absolve, O Lord, the souls of the faithful departed:
from every bond of sin.
Any by the succour of thy grace:
may they be found worthy to escape the avenging judgement.
And enjoy the bliss:
of everlasting light.

Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord: and let light perpetual shine upon him.

Prayer for Emeritus Pope Benedict

God of all grace and power,
behold, visit, and relieve thy servant Benedict;
look upon him with the eyes of thy mercy;
give him comfort and sure confidence in thee,
defend him in all danger,
and keep him in perpetual peace and safety;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Almighty and merciful God,
who through the fact of death itself
have mercifully unlocked for the human race
the gate to eternal life,
look kindly on your servant, Benedict, in his final struggle,
so that, united to your Son's Passion
and sealed with his Blood,
he may come without blemish into your presence.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Come, Lord Jesus!
Today we hosted an Advent day for members of the Ordinariate in the Midlands and North and welcomed friends from various places. It was so good for us to be together to celebrate Mass, enjoy lunch, and savour the readings and hymns of Advent in an Advent Carol Service by candlelight. The people of the Coventry group did us proud. Our thanks too to Fr Simon Ellis and Ronald Crane who sang parts of the Advent carol service beautifully, including the Magnificat to Anglican chant. Huge thanks also to Keith Ainsworth for playing the organ so brilliantly, as always. All in all, a top day. We look forward to the next one of these...

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them. We will remember them.

Remember, O Lord, all those who have died the death of honour and are departed in the hope of resurrection to Eternal Life, especially the Officers, men and women of our Sea, Land and Air Forces, to whom it was given to lay down their lives for the cause of freedom and justice. In that place of light, whence sorrow and mourning are far vanished, give them rest, O Lord, the Lover of men. Grant this for thine only Son, Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

Clergy time away in Walsingham
Many of the clergy of the Ordinariate, and some wives, gathered in Walsingham last week for a couple of days’ semi-retreat. Father Guy Nicholls, a priest of the Birmingham Oratory, gave two excellent addresses on St. John Henry Newman’s aesthetics ie his understanding of beauty, principally in its visible architectural form. He traced the architectural influences on Newman both in his Anglican years and later in his Catholic years and how they influenced and informed his thinking. Fr Nicholls could have spoken at length about Newman’s understanding of musical beauty, but as he said, that is for another occasion and can be found in his fairly recent book.

Unearthly Beauty: The Aesthetic of St John Henry Newman. By GUY NICHOLLS. Leominster: Gracewing, 2019.

Come, Lord Jesus!
Please join us for an Ordinariate Advent day called Come, Lord Jesus! at All Souls Coventry on SATURDAY 3rd DECEMBER. It’s an opportunity for members of the Ordinariate in the north and midlands, as well as friends, supporters and enquirers, to come together to worship and to share fellowship. The day will begin with Mass at 12noon (Divine Worship), followed by lunch and some social time together, and will conclude with a candlelit service of Advent Carols and Readings at 4pm (lasting about an hour). Come and experience the Ordinariate and some of its distinctiveness for yourself. We're blessed with a beautiful church and a fine organ and organist, ideal for such an occasion.

Honouring our Patron
The Coventry group continues to meet socially and for a time of worship/devotion once a month on a Wednesday evening. This month we honoured the Patron Saint of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, Saint John Henry Newman. This year his feast day, 9th October, fell on a Sunday, so wasn't kept. Nevertheless we continue to ask him to pray for us, for the unity of Christians and for all the people of this land.

Novena to Our Lady of Walsingham
In preparation for the Solemnity of Our Lady of Walsingham on Saturday 24th September, some of the group were able to gather to pray the Novena to Our Lady Walsingham, bringing our own petitions and those of our families, the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, the Church, the country and the world. Sung Mass on the actual Feast day is at 11am, followed by sausage and bacon batches for brunch in the parish room.

We fly to thy protection, O holy Mother of God. Despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us from all danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin, Amen.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Requiescat in Pace

O ALMIGHTY God, the God of the spirits of all flesh: multiply, we beseech thee, to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who rests in Jesus, the manifold blessings of thy love, that the good work which thou didst begin in her may be perfected unto the day of Jesus Christ. And of thy mercy, O heavenly Father, vouchsafe that we, who now serve thee here on earth, may at the last, together with her, be found meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; for the sake of the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

Rest eternal grant unto her, O Lord,
and let light perpetual shine upon her.
May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

Prayer for the King
ALMIGHTY God, the fountain of all goodness, we humbly beseech thee to bless our Soveriegn Lord, King Charles, the parliaments in all his dominions, and all who are set under him; that they may order all things in wisdom, righteousness, and peace, to the honour of thy holy name, and the good of thy Church and people; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

March for Life 2022
10 Million too many! Life from conception, no exception! Cries that rang out around the streets of Westminster yesterday as record numbers of people gathered for this year's March for Life, including a group of us from Coventry and other Ordinariate communities. The March was peaceful, positive and loving - a simple affirmation of the sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death. The first reading at the Mass celebrated at Southwark cathedral by Bishop John Sherrington set the scene perfectly:

Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. We have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways; we refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the likeness of God. For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. (2Corinthians 4)
