Good to see these bells getting a new life

When the Whitechapel Bell Foundry ceased operations the contents & stock were auctioned during April 2017. This included a quantity of bells. We acquired or secured ten bells but were outbid on others. This month has seen five of these bells installed as part of two new rings of bells. The light ring of eight at Richmond, NSW, Australia incorporated two stock bells and three were installed as part of the eight at Upper Riccarton, Christchurch, NZ. Two others are part of the light ring of six at Palmerston, NT, Australia. Of the remaining three, two are on offer to Todwick, S. Yorkshire as part of their proposed augmentation project and one is on offer to a church in Hampshire where it is proposed to install a ring of bells.

Looking very tidy!

June Summary

Work up the tower has progressed. We have had a professional cleaning contractor, Hands Cleaners from Shepshed, come to give the tower a thorough cleaning, and it is now a much nicer place to be in.

The following 2 weeks the Bellfoundry returned and scraped the frame down, treated the woodwork, and painted all the metalwork, as well as installing 'galebreaker' fabric on the louvres, to prevent weather and bird ingress to keep it nice and tidy. It already looks very inviting ready for the return of the bells.

We have just heard that the bells are due to return the first week in September, and should hopefully be completed in time for the Beer Festival weekend 19th/20th September.

As it is a 3 week install, we may need some extra volunteers to help the bellhanger, so if anyone may be available between 1st and 19th September, and willing to help, please contact us.

All of this work would not be able to be completed without the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and players of the National Lottery.

Subject to faculty & fund-raising it is hoped to replace the existing poor toned ring of bells at St Paul, Southville, Bristol with a True Harmonic ring. A bell ex-St Barnabas, Southampton is to become the 3rd and a bell ex-Brockville, Canada the 4th of six; both bells are being donated by the Keltek Trust.

I had a lovely email from a lady whose grandson had learned a good bit about bellfounding from my website. She asked if I could share this blog about bellfounding which I am happy to do:

Well done Eric!

Bell founding is a centuries-old craft that combines art and engineering to create objects that are both beautiful and functional.
