Kevin Keegan pictured this week 30 years ago meeting some of the campers from 1st Cookstown Boys' Brigade who visited a Newcastle United training session . We held a Company camp in 1996 in Whitley Bay near Newcastle.
Keith Gillespie (NUFC and NI star) is also pictured with some of the boys.
Sadly Kevin Keegan passed away yesterday.
Please share any of the boy’s names if you recognise them thirty years on ! Here’s a clue their initials are : IC ,SW, MW, JB, JF, WMcC …there are a few other “young faces” you might recognise as well.
The week before that camp one of our boys started his training with Newcastle Utd having been signed up by Kevin Keegan. He was of course Aaron Hughes and went on to play 205 games for Newcastle, over 500 professional club games in a 20 year career, as well as 112 international games for Northern Ireland.
The following year at the NI Milk Cup when a B.B.Officer asked the Newcastle Utd youth coach “How’s Aaron getting on ?” the reply was “Kevin Keegan thinks Aaron Hughes walks on water !”
