PARISH UPDATES
Second Collection next weekend is ‘Day for Life’ the day in the Church’s year dedicated to raising awareness about the meaning and value of human life at every stage and in every condition. The theme this year is “The wonder of the child in the womb”.
On a Mission - a few gardening volunteers are getting together on Tuesdays 9th, 16th and 23rd June at 2pm to tackle the 'rockery' area at the front of St Margaret Mary Church in Coleford. If anyone would like to help, gather up your muscles and digging tools; let Angie, Helen, Julia or Rosemary know you are coming or just turn up. You can also email Sam in the parish office: [email protected]
Baptismal Font at Cinderford: The website "Taking Stock" describes the Font at Our Lady of Victories:
"the font is a curious piece about which, strangely, nothing seems to be known. It is octagonal and fifteenth-century in style, well-worn and with a metal hasp as if for securing a font cover (as was often the case in medieval times). However, the figures and the unusual iconography are not medieval. One panel shows the dove returning with the olive branch to Noah in his (very small) Ark, presumably a type of Baptism. Another shows two fiery bowls (Pentecost?) and a hand holding a wand or staff (Moses striking the rock?); another has a bush bearing some kind of fruit (Tree of Life?); another may show the Baptism of Christ."
Despite enquiries among parishioners and a search through the parish archives we have been unable to find out where the font came from. Damsell, the stonemasons, advise that it consists of Portland Stone, thus ruling out Ireland as its origin. If any parishioner has any knowledge of its provenance Father Martin would be pleased to hear. It is planned to relocate the Font to Lydney.
The Rt Revd Bosco MacDonald, Bishop of Clifton,
wrote this message to all volunteers within the Diocese:
"This week we give thanks for the many volunteers across the Diocese of Clifton whose generosity, faith, and quiet service sustain so much of the life of the Church. In every parish and school, volunteers are often the hidden strength behind what others simply see “happening.” The church opened and cleaned, the flowers arranged, the tea poured, children prepared for the sacraments, the sick visited, the accounts checked, the welcome offered...
None of this happens by magic. It happens because people give their time, their gifts, and something of their heart. St Peter reminds us: “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10).
That is exactly what our volunteers do, often behind the scenes, week after week. Your service strengthens our parishes, supports the vulnerable, encourages our schools, and helps reveal the face of Christ in our communities. To all our volunteers, thank you. Your faithful service is deeply appreciated and remembered in prayer."
Rt Revd Bosco MacDonald, Bishop of Clifton.
