Today, the Sunday after Pentecost, is celebrated as Trinity Sunday and our Gospel reading for today reminds us of Christ's call to "make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit". We thought about the mission of the Church in our service and Sunday Focus explores the theme further: https://www.coldstreamdistrictchurches.org.uk/Groups/340382/Sunday_Focus.aspx

“We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.”
Psalm 33:20

Waiting
Colin Sinclair

Our daughter came to stay with us recently. While we always enjoy her visits there was an added edge to her stay. She was only able to be with us because she had just started her maternity leave from the hospital where she works as a midwife. Moreover the clock was ticking and she had only, according to her due date, four weeks of wating to go. We were sorry to see her go, but relieved when we heard she was back home, near to her husband and the hospital where she worked, where her friends and colleagues would be with her when her waiting came to an end.

We spend a lot of time waiting – ask any parent! We wait for so many things. For instance we wait for answers to questions, for change to happen, for healing, for justice to come, for answers to prayer, for relationships to work out, for the future to unfold.

Some waiting is hard because it is out of our control, or uncertainty is built into it, when it really matters, or when nothing is happening. But in this Psalm it is quite different. Here the Psalmist is waiting for the one who will never let us down. The waiting can be undertaken with patience, trust and dependence. The Lord cares and he can deliver what we need and can also protect us on the journey. Waiting is built in to the path to Pentecost.

Waiting is not easy but if you can trust the one you are wating for, then the time spent on waiting is not wasted. Waiting becomes an opportunity to grow in faith, to learn patience, and to recognize God’s presence more deeply.

Shall we pray?
God of the waiting, guide us and grow us. Amen.
