The Salvation Army began in Clowne on 23rd June 1887. The first meeting place was a joiner’s shop, a loft over a barn at the top of Cliff Hill. A disused cottage was the next meeting place until the Salvationists moved to a corrugated iron hut on the site of the present Lambs Garage, affectionately known as “the tin tabernacle” In July 1916, using second-hand bricks from which mortar was chipped b

y women comrades, the men of the corps assisted local builders G. Taylor & Son in building the present main hall on land donated by Mrs G Hibbard and her daughter Olive. In the early 1970’s an extension was built to the main hall to facilitate increasing youth related and outreach activities. A major reorganisation and refurbishment scheme was undertaken on both halls in 2006/7 resulting in the modern suite of buildings presently in use. Present day activities are numerous and include Sunday morning and evening worship services that are open to all (you don’t have to wear uniform or be a member of the Salvation Army!!), coffee mornings, luncheon clubs, activities for children and young people, amongst others. Clowne Salvation Army Band was first formed in 1894, and currently consists of approximately 20 active members. The band’s mission is to bring glory to God, provide music for worship, to spread the good news of the Gospel, and to bring people into a knowledge of Jesus Christ.
