We are so very grateful to Garfield Weston Foundation for their recent grant of £30,000 for our New Beginnings project. A project which has now begun implementation (more details to follow), and is scheduled to complete in February 2027. Their support, along with yours (Christleton and Littleton Community) and other bodies, is going to make a massive positive impact on the communities we serve - thank you.

The Garfield Weston Foundation is a family founded grant-maker supporting charities operating in a wide variety of sectors across the UK that make a positive difference within their communities.

Established by W. Garfield Weston in 1958 through an endowment of shares in the family business – now known as Associated British Foods plc – the Foundation continues to be guided by the Weston Family. The Trustees, each of whom are direct descendants of the founder, play an active, informed role in its work.

This successful model has ensured that our charitable donations have grown as the businesses have grown, enabling the Foundation to award grants totalling nearly £1.7 billion since its establishment. The most recent financial year 2024-2025 saw the Foundation give away almost £130 million to 2,967 charities.

There is drainage repair work scheduled all of this week, 3rd - 7th August.

During this time, the eastern path between the church car park and the main road will be closed. Similarly, the path running from the Lychgate to the east end of the church is also closed. The church is accessible via the West end from Pepper Street only please.

The vast majority of the churchyard remains accessible. However, small sections on the front (southern) eastern side will not be until the work is completed. We apologise for this inconvenience. Any problems please contact the parish office.

Thank you for your understanding. The major drainage repairs have been ongoing since February of this year.

St James Church in Cheshire has been awarded a grant of £7700 to explore how scientific practice, particularly coding and computational thinking – can serve as a participatory tool in God’s Kingdom, not just an academic discipline.

St James Church is one of fifteen churches and Christian organisations in the UK to receive funding from Scientists in Congregations, a grant programme run by Equipping Christian Leadership in an Age of Science, for 2026-27. ECLAS is an ecumenical project based at St John’s College, Durham University, in partnership with the University of York and the Church of England. Full details of the awarded projects are available at www.eclasproject.org.

Our project will design, pilot, and evaluate a replicable model for children and young people (ages around 9-14) that integrates learning python programming with the Gospel of Mark. It will be used to seed a new multi-generational science and faith worshipping community. The 12 weeks of coding and gospel engagement will begin from March 2027, with the “Byte-sized Faith” new worshipping community starting from April 2027.

“I am really excited about the prospect of exploring how scientific practice, a gift from God, is a key part of telling, receiving, and taking part in God’s story of new creation here on earth as in heaven. I look forward to sharing the journey with you in the years ahead.” Stefan Collier, Rector of Christleton.

David Wilkinson, ECLAS Project Director, said: “We are proud to make this significant investment into advancing the science-faith dialogue in the UK. These projects, which represent a wide range of topics, faith traditions, and geographic reach, will become exemplars to other churches and theological colleges who want to weave engagement with science and scientists into their mission and ministry.”

ECLAS and the Scientists in Congregations grant programme are funded by the John Templeton Foundation.

To celebrate turning 92, I’ve set myself a personal challenge:

I will be completing a virtual rowing distance of 21 miles (34 km) — the equivalent of swimming across the English Channel — all in support of the Hospice.

This is my way of giving back and showing that age doesn’t stop determination. Every mile I row is in honour of the incredible care and compassion the Hospice provides to families when they need it most.
