On the 24th May 1738, John Wesley had the “Aldersgate experience” (now commemorated annually as Aldersgate Day or Wesley Day) 🗓️

The Anglican priest and founder of the Methodist movement, experienced a life-changing spiritual awakening at Aldersgate in London ✨

In the afternoon he attended evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral. That evening, still heavy-hearted after his disappointing mission to Georgia, he went very unwillingly to a religious society meeting on Aldersgate Street 🗣️

This “Aldersgate experience” became the spark that propelled the evangelical revival. It transformed Wesley into the tireless preacher who would travel thousands of miles and establish Methodism as a global force 🌍

Here at Spendmore Lane Methodist Church in Coppull we continue Wesley’s work which happened all those years ago. Our service this morning will start at 10.30am and everybody is welcome 🙏

Join us in a prayer for all those sitting exams and deadlines, shared by Genesis Padgett, Methodist Youth President 🙏

Father God,
We pray today for those who are taking their SAT's, GCSE's, A-Levels, University Exams or any other exams that may be causing stress or pressure.

Lord we ask you to help them remember what they have learned and to do the best they can, with the understanding that they are perfect in your eyes.

Lord we pray too for teachers, parents, carers, and friends - that they can be full of love and care, to support our young people, and we pray that they too can have calm minds when they feel overwhelmed.

And for those who are anxious, or fearful for their future, we pray bring peace and love. May every young person know that one exam never defines their future, or their potential.

Father God give everyone the knowledge that you go with us always.
Amen.

This morning we listened to Pauline Curwen who talked about Jesus with his disciples in the eye of a storm. They thought he was asleep and could not help them 🌩️

They were certain they were about to drown and cried out to him: “Lord, save us!” (Matthew 8:25). Then he rebuked the winds and the waves, and suddenly there was calm 🙏

An important lesson in this story is that; his presence was with them all along. Even when he seemed to be asleep, his presence was their protection 💕

The disciples felt alone, but they were not.

And neither are we today ☀️

The candle is a great symbol for hope.

The smallest flicker of light reminds us we are not alone.

Hope is being able to see the light in the darkness.

Hope springs eternal.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness.

Only light can do that.

Hate cannot drive out hate.

Only love can do that ❤️

“The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.

He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.’” — Matthew 28:5-6 ☀️
