Celebrating 25 years as a local preacher ✝️

This morning we were delighted to see our own Susan Akhurst presented with an award to acknowledge 25 years as a fully-accredited Methodist local preacher 👏

To celebrate this significant milestone and dedicated work, a presentation was made during the Circuit Service at Chorley Town Hall earlier today 🥰

Susan has attended Spendmore Lane all her life and her family connections go all the way back to 1903 (even before) as the Methodist movement began in Coppull 🙏

Today we’d like to thank Susan for everything, always leaving her congregations encouraged and uplifted. We hope for many more years of enthusiasm, love and faith 💐

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Norma Crompton, aged 86-years-old.

Norma was a faithful and cherished member of our congregation who had attended Spendmore Lane Methodist Church since she was three - living round the corner on Kimberley Street.

She attended Sunday School, performed on the church stage, sermons and pantomimes, took part in walking days and was a lifelong member of Friendship Hour. Norma was also heavily involved in events and fundraising, often getting up early to bake prior to an event.

Over her church life, she ran the kitchen for many years and did the first Messiah tea in the school room. Norma was also proud to be a Sunday School teacher and founder member of JAM Club and Youth Club. Children used to call her “Grandma Norma”, as she loved to be involved with crafts, activities and nativities.

Later on in life Norma helped clean the church, held a key and opened up for those renting the premises; many of her roles which were behind the scenes. She was a Vestry and Church Steward, although her proudest moment was being asked to be a Communion Steward. Going out into the community and providing communion to the old and housebound.

We give thanks to God for Norma’s life and legacy. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. Her funeral will be taking place at our church on Tuesday, 9th June at 11.30am and all are welcome.

On the 24th May 1738, John Wesley had the “Aldersgate experience” (now commemorated annually as Aldersgate Day or Wesley Day) 🗓️

The Anglican priest and founder of the Methodist movement, experienced a life-changing spiritual awakening at Aldersgate in London ✨

In the afternoon he attended evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral. That evening, still heavy-hearted after his disappointing mission to Georgia, he went very unwillingly to a religious society meeting on Aldersgate Street 🗣️

This “Aldersgate experience” became the spark that propelled the evangelical revival. It transformed Wesley into the tireless preacher who would travel thousands of miles and establish Methodism as a global force 🌍

Here at Spendmore Lane Methodist Church in Coppull we continue Wesley’s work which happened all those years ago. Our service this morning will start at 10.30am and everybody is welcome 🙏

Join us in a prayer for all those sitting exams and deadlines, shared by Genesis Padgett, Methodist Youth President 🙏

Father God,
We pray today for those who are taking their SAT's, GCSE's, A-Levels, University Exams or any other exams that may be causing stress or pressure.

Lord we ask you to help them remember what they have learned and to do the best they can, with the understanding that they are perfect in your eyes.

Lord we pray too for teachers, parents, carers, and friends - that they can be full of love and care, to support our young people, and we pray that they too can have calm minds when they feel overwhelmed.

And for those who are anxious, or fearful for their future, we pray bring peace and love. May every young person know that one exam never defines their future, or their potential.

Father God give everyone the knowledge that you go with us always.
Amen.
