We have been asked to share the following information with you regarding more urgent gas works in the area:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Road closures – Market Avenue and Basin Road, Chichester for urgent gas main replacement

From Monday 15th June for 13 weeks, SGN specialist contractors I&G Contractors Limited, will start a programme of work to replace the gas main on sections of Market Avenue and Basin Road, Chichester.

These works are essential and have been planned with urgency due gas leaks and the condition of the old gas main. Replacing the old pipe with a new plastic pipe will ensure we can continue to provide a safe and efficient gas supply to the community and avoid further gas leaks.

Due to the location of the gas pipes in the road, for everyone’s safety these works will be completed under road and lane closures.

To help minimise the disruption to traffic as much as possible, we have planned these works in the following phases.

Market Avenue, Chichester – 5 Weeks

Phase 1 – 15/06/26

Lane Closure on Market Avenue no exit from South Street onto Market Avenue

Phase 2 – Approx 29/06/26

Eastbound Closure Market Avenue – this will mean no vehicles can travel eastbound along Market Avenue, there will be a signed diversion route in place.

Basin Road, Chichester – 8 Weeks

Phase 3 – 13/07/26

Basin Road Closed from its junction with Canal Wharf to Railway Crossing

Phase 4

As soon as phase three works are complete the road will be opened, we will be working from Railway Crossing to junction Market Avenue under a lane closure on the one-way section of Basin Road.

The road closures will mean:

No vehicle access past the closures – signed diversion routes will be in place
Vehicle access to properties/businesses within the closure will be maintained where it is safe to do so – we will liaise directly with properties affected
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times

Major impact to bus routes

Bus routes will be disrupted with some routes not being able to operate to timetable.

We’d ask local road users to use your bus service wherever possible to travel around town - this will help alleviate the number of vehicles on the road adding to traffic congestion.

We appreciate how disruptive these urgent works will be for Chichester; our engineers will be doing everything they can to complete these works as quickly and as safely as possible.

If you need to speak to us about these works, you can contact our Customer Service Team by email [email protected] or alternatively you can call them on 0800 912 1700, they will direct your enquiry to one of the team for response. We will also be providing information and updates about this project on our website Roadworks in your area | SGN Your gas. Our network.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience our work causes and thank you for your patience and understanding.

🐶 ‘Let's Talk: Dogs in Public Spaces’ – we want to hear your views!

Rules covering dog fouling, exclusion areas, and where dogs must be kept on a lead in public spaces are set out in a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO). These apply to areas such as footpaths and verges, parks, and children’s play areas.
They help ensure everyone can enjoy our beautiful open spaces and beaches, while also protecting local wildlife and supporting responsible dog ownership.

With the current PSPO due to end this October, we’re proposing to extend it for a further three years, with some updates.

The Government has made modifications to proposals for local government reorganisation in West Sussex, which would see Chichester District join with Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex Districts to form one unitary authority, and Arun, Adur and Worthing Districts forming another. You can have your say by responding to the consultation.

📣 Latest news 📣

The Government has today (12 May) launched a further consultation on options for local government reorganisation in Sussex.

Following feedback from the previous consultation, which opened in November, the Government is now seeking views on two additional options. These are based on modifications to proposals previously submitted by local authorities in Sussex.

The consultation will run until 23.59 on 15 June and can be accessed at: https://orlo.uk/Xmalm

We have been asked to share the following information which may lead to additional traffic in Donnington:

REMINDER Advance warning - Temporary 2-way traffic lights, Selsey Road, Hunston – essential gas main replacement

From Monday 01 June for 5 weeks SGN engineers will be replacing a section of gas main on Selsey Road in Hunston between Downview to the junction of Farmfield Nurseries. These works involve replacing old metal gas pipes with new plastic pipes to ensure we can continue to provide residents/businesses with a safe and efficient gas supply and avoid disruptive unplanned gas leaks in the future.

Due to the location of the gas pipes in the road, for everyone’s safety we will need to have temporary two-way traffic lights in place to help maintain traffic flow, we will be manually controlling these lights

We understand temporary traffic lights in this location will cause delays to local traffic – we’d advise road users to plan journeys to avoid traffic delays.

If you need to speak to us about these works, you can contact our Customer Service Team by email [email protected] or alternatively you can call them on 0800 912 1700, they will direct your enquiry to one of the team for response.

Please can we assure you our engineers will be working as quickly and as safely as possible to complete these works.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience our work causes and thank you for your patience and understanding.

We've been advised that more work is needed to repair the gas leak on Stockbridge Road.

As you may be aware, SGN attempted to repair the gas leak overnight on Thursday last week. Unfortunately, the leak could not be fully resolved, and SGN will therefore be returning to site to carry out further repairs outside House No. 75.

The works are scheduled to take place from 7:00pm on Wednesday 28 April until 6:00am on Thursday 29 April, operating under two‑way traffic lights just before the mini roundabout on Stockbridge Road, Chichester

Please note that these times are indicative and the works may take longer if additional time is required to fully stop the leak. We will continue to keep you updated.

Further information on the emergency gas leak repair on Stockbridge Road, from SGN:

Temporary traffic lights on the junction of A27/Stockbridge Road – emergency gas leak

From 7pm on Thursday 16 April, SGN emergency repair teams will be completing work to repair a gas escape located on Stockbridge Road close the A27 outside number 75a. Due to the location of the gas pipe in the road, for everyone’s safety it will be necessary to have two-way temporary traffic lights in operation.

To help minimise the disruption for road users and minimise the impact for traffic on the A27, the traffic lights will be manually controlled with priority given to road users heading southbound off the A27.

It’s too early to confirm how long the repairs will take, we are hopeful we can complete the repairs overnight and have the road re-opened for the following morning, Friday 17 April. We will keep you updated of any changes.

We understand our work and road closures will be disruptive for road users; please can we assure you our emergency engineers will be working as quickly and as safely as possible to complete these works.

If you need to speak to us about these works, you can contact our Customer Service Team by emailing [email protected] or alternatively call them on 0800 912 1700, they will direct your enquiry to the team for response.

Thank you for patience and understanding.
