I was the Vicar of Graylingwell Chapel when we re-opened the building in April 2010 at the invitation of the Homes and Communities Agency who looked after decommissioned NHS sites at the time. I just released my 10th Studio Rock Album on Spotify and one of the songs is about the first time I stepped inside the chapel when it was boarded up and derelict. The song is called, Beauty of the Broken. Have a listen. Steve Flashman

Had a conversation today with somebody who attended Graylingwell Chapel when it was indeed a chapel! Immanuel Church open the building when it had been closed for 13 years and brought the place to life. That was in 2010. For more than 6 years the building was alive with activity including a 200 strong community choir and a vibrant church for all ages. I was the vicar there together with my wife Sarah. We had weddings, baptisms and funerals there. It was a significant place for many in the community. Now air brushed out of the picture. But now here's the thing. In the newly refurbished building there is almost no mention at all of the thriving church that met there and all the community activities. Why not? It's like we have been air brushed out of the picture. Shame on you Community Development Trust for ignoring the most significant things that happened at Graylingwell Chapel in many years.

When we re-opened Graylingwell Chapel on 10th October 2010, the then Home And Communities Agency of the government allowed us to use it on a peppercorn rent. It quickly became a community hub. In fact, at one public consultation held by Linden Homes, they pointed out that an aerial view of the Chapel showed that the building was situated at the centre of a cross shape in the geography of the site. Then they said that Graylingwell Chapel is at the heart of the community and Immanuel Church would be that heart. That's exactly what happened. This recent history has not been mentioned by any of the officials surrounding this refurbishment project. It's as if they have erased history. Why is that? See pics... Art Exhibition. Community Choir Concert. Vibrant, relevant and meaningful worship services. Community Bus. Christmas Festivals. Music Concerts. The Chapel was often full of people from the community at these events. What happened?

Immanuel Church re-opened the Chapel after it being closed for 13 years when Linden Homes started their development project on the Graylingwell site. We were already using the chapel as a community hub before the CDT were appointed. We had a thriving church community meeting there every Sunday, a full time children's and youth worker, the building was packed for many community events, including a 200 strong community choir, music festivals, gardening club, debt counseling, children's playbus etc. It's a real shame that none of this has been acknowledged. I hope and pray that the Chapel will be used as a place of worship along with community events - that's what it was built for and that's the story the stained glass windows tell. The clue is in its name!

It's an amazing place! I am the Vicar there! We re-opened Graylingwell Chapel with invited guests including the Mayor Of Chichester and Church of England Clergy on 10th October 2010. The Chapel was packed - and still is every Sunday at 10.00am and other times during the week. A lot of people visit us who had previous connections with the Chapel when it was used by the NHS on the Graylingwell Hospital site. It was decommissioned many years ago and lay empty. Now we have a thriving church community there, committed to creating a community space for all the people of Graylingwell and the surrounding communities. We have a 100 strong community choir; community support groups including: Debt Counselling; Marriage Preparation; Recovering From Divorce Courses; ALPHA; a Play Bus; a variety of other community events including Street Parties and and regular events for young people and children. Families are welcome. The bishop of Chichester, Rt Revd Martin Warner has visited the Chapel on several occasions, and supports all we are trying to achieve in reaching out with meaningful support networks to the growing community.
