On the 31st May, the Descent of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost) was celebrated at Chesterfield.
Fr Jonathan gave a homily on the Holy Spirit and the unity of the Trinity. There was a baptism after the Liturgy and then the reception of an adult into the catechumenate.
The feast of Pentecost reminds us of how quickly and abundantly God can bring forth new life. Glory to God for all!

Next service: Sunday of All Saints (Всех святых) (Sun 7th June at 10:30)

Christ is Risen!
On Tuesday 21st April (Radonitsa), Fr Jonathan and family visited the City Road Cemetery in Sheffield to serve the first "joyful" memorial service after Pascha at the graveside of a departed Russian Orthodox lady, along with her family and friends. Hymns of commemoration and celebration for Pascha were both sung.

A panikhida will be served tomorrow at Chesterfield after the Liturgy (Sunday of the Paralytic Man (о расслабленном) Blessing of the Waters). Names can be submitted on the day or in advance to Priest-Jonathan Cowley.

Saint Guthlac was a 7th / 8th century English ascetic, born in the ancient Kingdom of Mercia. After time as a soldier, he spent his teenage years as a ruthless brigand, terrorising the local area along with his gang. Being convicted of his sins, Guthlac sincerely repented, returned his ill-gotten gains, and entered a monastery in Repton, in modern day Derbyshire. Inspired by the lives of the desert fathers, St Guthlac got a blessing to live an eremitic life and, at age 26, settled on a isolated island in the Lincolnshire fens called Crowland. St Guthlac spent the rest of his life in prayer and repentance, fighting demons - who oftentimes physically attacked him. For these reasons, he is sometimes called "the English St Anthony." Through these struggles he was granted the gifts of healing, clairvoyance and exorcism.
