Parish Newsletter
Sunday 31st May 2026: The Most Holy Trinity (Solemnity)

Dear friends, we offer our warmest congratulations to those received into the Church last weekend and we very much look forward to Olivia and Taylor being able to join us this Sunday in Eucharistic Communion. It’s at once deeply humbling and very encouraging to welcome these new members into the parish and we will soon be publishing dates for further meetings so that they, and anyone else who might be interested, can continue to grow in the faith, which we all profess and strive, by God’s grace, to live by. Ongoing formation in the faith is essential for us to be able to articulate it with clarity, respect and conviction: in a word “to give reasons for the hope which is within us” (cf. 1 Pet 3:15). One of the consequences of our growing in faith is our commitment to the principles of Catholic Social Teaching to which our Holy Father Pope Leo XIV has added a significant contribution to the teaching left by his predecessors, with the publication of his first Encyclical Letter Magnifica Humanitas to which our Bishop refers in his pastoral letter which will be read at each of the Masses over the weekend, and both texts will be soon made available on the parish website.
In our ongoing attempts to keep the sacristy and window ledges clutter-free, I would encourage you make use of the pigeonholes in the working sacristy for correspondence, DBS forms, expenses claims and the likes. The spaces are labelled. Moreover, with a view to the proposed works to renovate the meeting room, (formerly known as the day chapel), we will soon need to clear out some space and will be appealing for volunteers to help with that. Please watch this space!
Some weeks ago after a talk I gave in church, at Welcome Wednesday, my portable speaker (Soundcore) disappeared. Perhaps someone put it to one side or else it made its way to a new home… I am grateful for any updates before replacing it.
With all good wishes as we celebrate God who reveals himself to us as the eternal communion of living and lifegiving love: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; a mystery, not to try and get our head around, but rather for us “to dive into” through regular prayer and adoration and allow our hearts to rest in his love in whose image we were made and where our greatest joy is to be found. With a blessing, Fr David +

Sunday 24th May 2026: Pentecost Sunday

Dear friends, as we come to the great celebration of Pentecost and share in the joy of the newly baptised, and of those who have been received into full communion with the Catholic Church, I would just like to share two things with you this week. The first is a prayer by the great St Augustine, and, as you will discover, if you’ve not done so already, he’s a particular favourite of mine! His simple prayer to the Holy Spirit is one I would encourage you to use often: “Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my works, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen”.
The second is a short quotation one of you, my dear parishioners, shared with me, as I was about to write these lines. It reads: “Bethlehem was God with us. Calvary was God for us. Pentecost is God in us”. Short, beautiful and full of truth! Pentecost is a gift indeed to be lived…and shared generously with others! This great mission is yours and mine and the Spirit will give us all we need! Happy Whitsuntide to one and all! Fr David +

Parish Newsletter
Sunday 17th May 2026: 7th Sunday of Easter

Come, Holy Spirit! This is our fervent prayer during this Novena in preparation for the Solemnity of Pentecost, which is the last word of the great celebration of Easter, as the wonderful gift of God’s love and the fruit of Christ’s sacrifice fills the whole world and shapes the Church to become the bearer of his message. The Spirit is, at the same time, the first word of evangelisation, which is the primary mission of the Church in the world.
In a particular way, as a parish community, here at St Werburgh’s, we make this prayer with and on behalf of those who will join us through the grace of baptism and the other sacraments of Christian initiation; this will certainly be a moment of great joy for us all.
The same prayer should be on our lips and rise from our hearts at the beginning of each day and before the various activities we undertake to help us live a truly spiritual life. We call on the same Spirit to enlighten the young people taking exams and finishing papers and projects, and we ask the Holy Spirit to bring healing and wholeness into lives where there is brokenness and pain and his glorious light where there is darkness and confusion.
This coming Friday, at the Catholic High School the leavers from years 11 and 13 will gather to give thanks to God for their time at the school. Do please pray for them as they set out in new directions…
In these days, like the Apostles in the Upper Room, we wait with our Lady. Let us stay close to Mary, the well-beloved Spouse of the Holy Spirit who can show us how to live as faithful missionary disciples of her Son. May God bless us and may the Spirit unite us to make of our life a hymn of praise and a sign to others of God’s love. Fr David +

Sunday 10th May 2026: 6th Sunday of Easter

Dear friends in Christ, this week we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Lord’s Ascension into heaven. It is a Holy Day of Obligation, and so I invite you to come along to one of the three masses to be offered here in church, or indeed at a church or chapel close to where you work. Jesus goes to prepare a place for us, and as we rejoice that in Him our human nature is glorified, we give thanks that the same One sitting at the Father’s right hand gives us his Spirit to “help us in our weakness” and to accompany us on our journey through life. On Wednesday evening, May 13, please do come along and join those preparing to join the Church and meditate together on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary, to contemplate the life of Christ with Mary, our Mother, and implore with her a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit into the parish and into our hearts. What a wonderful gift to offer our Lady during this month of May!
As indicated last week, this year, we will celebrate the Vigil of Pentecost, on Saturday, May 23, here in church, as some members of the Lead, Kindly Light enquiry group will receive the sacraments of Christian initiation and be welcomed into full communion with the Church. Such news is surely a source of joy for this parish community. Please do accompany both the candidates and catechumens with your prayers as they prepare for this important step. On that Saturday evening, there will be no celebration of Mass in Rowton.
I wish to reiterate my thanks for your support, and especially for the recent donations made to the special collection for the Holy Places over Easter, and also given in support of the work of the Sisters of the Holy Family of the Needy, following Sr Mary Lucy’s recent visit. Totals collected will be published in the coming weeks. Watch this space, and may God reward you for your continued generosity.
As we continue to pray for the children who have received Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time, or for those who are preparing to do so, let us think back to our own first holy communion day and ask God to fill us with renewed fervour and awe as we ourselves approach the altar to receive such a gift, and why not make some time to pray quietly in the Lord’s Eucharistic presence by making a visit to the Blessed Sacrament or coming along to spend some time in silent adoration during one of the holy hours each week, here in church, where his love awaits us. Parish Newsletter
3rd May 2026: 5th Sunday of Easter

Today, in the Gospel, as we return to the Upper Room with our Lord and his disciples, and we hear the most amazing claim concerning Jesus’ identity. We build our lives on Him and his love demands nothing less than our soul, our life, our all. Isn’t that what it means to be a royal priesthood? A people called and chosen by Him, to offer all that we are, all that we have and all that we do, each and every day of our life, by God’s grace, so as to live like Jesus and give glory to God the Father. This, my dear brothers and sisters, is what it means to be Christian. It’s our very wonderful calling and gift to the world, and it is so encouraging that others want this for themselves, and so, I ask you to pray for those who have been journeying with us over the past weeks and months to deepen their understanding and love for Christ, some of whom will be received into the church during Mass celebrated on the Vigil of the Solemnity of Pentecost, Saturday, May 23, here in church. Please note, Rowton Regulars, that there will be no mass celebrated in the Methodist chapel on that date.
As part of their journey in faith, next Wednesday, May 6, at 7 p.m., the Lead, kindly light group will consider the place of Mary in the plan of Salvation, and then on the evening of Wednesday May 13, also at 7 p.m., parishioners are invited to join us for a time of Marian devotion, during which we will meditate on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary. Please make a note and come along, if you are able, as we entrust ourselves, the parish, to pray for peace in the world and present all our intentions to the Blessed Mother during this month of May. The Catenian Association has kindly donated some rosaries, with ‘How to pray the rosary’ cards. Please take one and make good use of them and give our Lady a place in your home and in your heart, just as God has given her a place in his Heart in the glory of heaven.
Earlier this week, I received the following message from Sr Mary Lucy, from the Holy Family Sisters of the Needy “With a grateful heart I express our profound appreciation for your generosity of heart in allowing us to come to your parish for mission appeal last weekend. I sincerely appreciate the warm reception and hospitality I enjoyed within that short period and in a very special way your wonderful motivation of your parishioners to donate generously to the appeal. I sincerely appreciate the welcoming attitude of your parishioners and their generosity. I pray the good Lord to enrich and reward you all immensely.” Should you still wish to make an offering, you can still do so via the card machine or place your donation in an envelope marked Holy Family Appeal. Thank you!
In this 300th anniversary year of the birth of St Gerard Majella, the Redemptorists have organized a pilgrimage with his relics to every diocese in England and Wales. I am delighted to say that we are one of four churches in Shrewsbury Diocese to welcome these. There will be a Mass on the evening of Tuesday, May 26, in honour of the Italian saint at which we will welcome Fr Royston Price, C.Ss.R., who is organizing the tour. The relics will be exposed for veneration throughout the day. Please let your friends know. Further information will follow.
And finally, let’s not forget to pray for the children who will receive Holy Communion for the first time this month for them to receive Jesus with love and devotion and grow in friendship with him throughout their lives, after all, isn’t that what we all desire? United with you in this prayer. May God bless you. Fr David +
