As we head into another hot spell here's your reminder that churches are often much cooler than other spaces. You can come to Wesley, sit in our worship area and get free water refills from the cafe. Come as you are, all are welcome. Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 2pm.

The last of the films at Wesley today. A powerful and heartbreaking tale of love, hope and loss inside an asylum seeker detention centre. May we not lose sight of the fact that these are real people with real lives, real fears and real hopes. All made in God's image.

Today is Sanctuary Sunday - the final day of Refugee Week 2026. 🧡

Churches across the UK are invited to mark this day in worship - to reflect on what it means to be a people of sanctuary, and to commit to the long, faithful, practical work of welcome.

The Sanctuary Prayer:

I pray to you, Holy God, for the Church of Christ throughout the world, that
we shall be blessed by your grace, and that all will be given strength to bear
witness to the grace of God in mission and ministry, worship and prayer.

I pray to you, Holy God, for all nations and all leaders, that you will
illuminate within and before them the pathways made of justice, mercy and
humility for all to walk, and to build peace and healing.

I pray to you, Holy God, for all who need help and support today, especially
those I hold up before you [people can be named], that your grace will be on
them and that you will bless them. And I pray for all those who provide care.

I pray to you, Holy God, for all who are far from home, for prisoners,
immigrants, exiles, refugees and all who seek sanctuary, that you will be
the shelter of their lives and souls. Help me, and all I work with, to build
communities of welcome, hospitality and sanctuary for all.

I pray to you, Holy God, that I may be sanctuary, and be given the grace
to follow Christ and to practise his art of hospitality and welcome to the
stranger. Help me to love those who hate me so that together we can make
the world a better place.

I hold with thanks before you, Holy God, those who have died for justice,
for they have brought us new life, and those whose memory is precious to
us. Grant them peace. Give strength to all who are bereaved. Bless all who
mourn the loss of their homes and livelihoods. And grant us wisdom and
encouragement from the vision, witness and example of all the saints who
have gone before us.

In the name of Christ.
Amen.

Today is World Refugee Day, an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe.

It falls each year on 20 June and honours the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution.

We hope you'll join us as we pray:

'God, creator of all,
For people who are displaced:
may they find a safe refuge,
and the courage to keep going.
For people who have lost control of their lives:
may they know a sure foundation,
and the courage to rebuild with hope.
For people who live in fear:
may they know peace and protection,
and the courage to face each new day.
For disillusioned people:
may they have hope in a future,
and the courage to believe it is still possible.
In times of crisis, sorrow, and uncertainty,
when courage feels beyond reach,
draw near in love,
providing the resilience and strength needed for each day.
Amen'

We're nearing the end of the film festival. Last night we watched two film shorts and had a time of discussion. It was good to get together in solidarity and strengthen our commitment to those seeking sanctuary.
