The Skylark church team serving at Dukes Orchard has cooked its final meal.

Stu Alleway and Paul Leaman met with the managers at Dukes Orchard back in April 2016. And in May that year, started our first monthly cake and coffee morning. In September, the same year, Paul led a team to cook a two course meal on the final Friday of each month. In the 5 years, the residents have enjoyed over 65 cake and coffee mornings as well as over 50 lunches. Even during lockdown, when permitted, the team held outdoor cake and coffee mornings. When we weren't allowed to meet up, we never missed a birthday and would sing outside the residents windows through our masks whilst standing 2 metres apart!"

Paul says "The team had agreed that the season was run as the dynamic had changed since the early days. Dukes now takes in a younger client, many of whom are working. Sadly, many of the original attendees had either passed away or had moved to places which delivered a higher clinical level of care"

Paul in acknowledging the team said "Kimmy and I couldn't have led this team without the current and former team members. People who have served included Pete and Val Hylton, Kevin Killin, Steve Yelland, Stu Alleway, Carol Stern and Kathleen Thompson. The current team, Rob and Pauline Alleway and Lesley Kemp, Kimmy and I are pictured at the final meal.

Our aim was to try and bring people together, to create a community and to cook them a nourishing meal. We believe that we achieved that. We have agreed that we wanted to maintain our friendship with the senior ressies and will take them out for cake and coffee in Writtle village as well having lunch with them at our houses"

Finally, thanks to Pete and Nicki Sims for their support since the very beginning.

ps Did I mention that when we first started, the Environmental Health team awarded us a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ rating, we retained that earlier this year on our second inspection!

Our first lunch club of 2022 held at Dukes Orchard. We often share pictures of the residents, but today, I am posting photos of the brilliant team who cooked a delicious meal of Fish pie, cauliflower cheese, carrots and broccoli, followed by an upside-down pineapple cake and custard. Thanks to Lesley Kemp, Rob and Pauline Alleway and Kimmy Leaman. We missed Kathleen Thompson and Stu Alleway who are part of the team.

Today we had our Christmas dinner at Dukes Orchard. In these interesting and challenging times we face, it’s been beautiful being able to re-connect and spend more time with some of our dear friends at Dukes. As you’ll hear from Paul’s talk, Christmas offers us all hope.

Yesterday we said a fond farewell to Dave Wyatt from Dukes Orchard. Dave was a regular attendee at our cake and coffee mornings and lunch clubs. He was at our first ever event back in May 2016 and along with his daughters Sam and Elaine shared many happy times together.
I was honoured to be asked to take the service, Kimmy read a poem and Rob Alleway read from Rev 21.
Lesley, Pauline and Kathleen were able to join us.
Dave, we'll miss you, but your memory will stay with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sam, Elaine and Tessa and wider family
Paul ❤️

We served 20 meals to our friends at Dukes Orchard at our lunch club on Friday 29th October. Everyone seemed to enjoy the chicken casserole with dumplings, mash, carrots, broccoli and cabbage, followed by apple pie and custard. All freshly cooked from scratch in the kitchen @ Dukes. Thanks again to our great team of volunteers who have been joined by two residents Nigel and Anita who helped with the washing up!

Our next cake and coffee morning at Dukes on November 12th has been cancelled as we are joining with David's family at his service of celebration at Chelmsford crematorium, South Chapel. The family have asked Paul to lead the service which begins at 1130am.

David, one of our dear friends at Dukes Orchard passed away this morning. He had been poorly for a long time. He was one of the first people we met when we started our cake and coffee morning at Dukes back in 2016. He was a character and although a severe stroke robbed him of his mobility, it did not take away his cheeky smile. Our love is with his daughters Sam and Elaine and their family

Christmas cake delivery! Kimmy is a great Christmas cake baker and this year a number of our friends at Dukes Orchard received their cakes. It's a tough time for many of the residents, as they dont get to see many people. Plus, its not been possible to provide the cake and coffee morning or the lunch club.
So it was good to see some of them today, Vera on the left and Marina on the right. They send their love and thanks and say Happy Christmas Skylark church ❤️❤️

Some of the Dukes Orchard team were there today to sing Happy birthday to one of our friends, David.
Lesley Kemp baked a lovely chocolate cake and the team gave a card and box of chocolates to help David celebrate his 81st birthday.

Sadly, two other residents died in the last month, both had been attendees at our monthly lunch club - George and Ken.

Unfortunately, we have been unable to provide cake and coffee mornings or lunch clubs since March, but we have always been there to help them celebrate their birthdays.

We hope to be able to get back to Dukes in the spring of 2021.

This is a photo of Victor, one of the residents at Dukes Orchard. This picture was taken at our Valentine's lunch in February. Which turned out to be our last meal at Dukes before lockdown.
Sadly, Vic passed away on Friday morning. His niece, Lee, rang me to let us know. He'd been unwell and had been in hospital for a few weeks.
Vic was a real gentleman, so bright, articulate and very interesting to listen to. A sailor who'd seen service towards the end of the 2nd World War.
We will miss you Vic, who is now reunited with his wife. It was our pleasure to have known you over the last 4 years, and to have spent time in your company. God bless you, our friend ❤️
