Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
We celebrate the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary because our Lady’s birth portends the birth of the Saviour. Mary, graced by a singular honour and vocation, was preserved from the slightest taint of original sin from the first moment of her conception. In celebrating her birthday, we celebrate the beginning of a life of total and yet ever-deepening union with God—a union that allowed Mary to become God’s own Mother. Thus we “see with what sentiments of tender devotion the Lord would have us honour Mary, in whom he has placed the plenitude of all good” (Saint Bernard of Clairvaux).

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sunday 6th September
Mass: Saturday Vigil 5pm, Sunday 11am
When Saint Paul says that we are to “owe no one anything, except to love each other”, he is not referring to something sentimental. The love that the apostle enjoins on us is summed up by the Lord’s words through Ezekiel: “If…you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand.” Our love must extend to those attitudes and actions that would prevent our neighbours from truly loving and embracing their own call to holiness. “If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.” The salvation of a soul is the greatest victory imaginable.

Saint Augustine
Born in Tagaste, North Africa, in 354, Augustine entered the Church at the age of thirty-two. After his baptism by Saint Ambrose in 387, he was ordained and then in 395 elected Bishop of Hippo. His over 1,700 writings include sermons, treatises, scriptural commentaries, the spiritual classic Confessions, and the magisterial City of God. His biographer Possidius wondered how anyone could have produced such a volume of work. At the end of his life, Augustine requested that the seven penitential psalms, copied in large print, be hung in his room. He recited them for the ten days leading up to his death on 28 August 430.

Saint Monica
Almost everything we know about Monica comes from her son, Saint Augustine. At about the age of sixteen, Augustine fell in with bad companions and took a concubine. Monica greatly desired that her son become a Christian, and for this she laboured long—praying, pleading, weeping. To her joy, Augustine was baptised in Milan by Saint Ambrose at the age of thirty-two. She died in Ostia in 387. Augustine praised God for his mother: “Graciously you heard her, and you did not despise her tears when they flowed down from her eyes and watered the earth beneath, in whatsoever place she prayed. Graciously you heard her.”
Let us pray for our wayward or lapsed relatives and friends to St. Monica’s intercession, she never gave up on Augustine.

Feast of Saint Bartholomew

Bartholomew, one of the Twelve, is traditionally identified with Nathanael of today’s Gospel. To Nathanael, Philip issues the invitation: “Come and see.” Coming to Jesus, Nathanael not only sees, but “is seen”. Jesus tells him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” This revelation moves Nathanael to confess: “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” This apostle, Pope Benedict XVI said, “stands before us to tell us that attachment to Jesus can also be lived and witnessed to without performing sensational deeds. Jesus himself, to whom each of us is called to dedicate his or her own life and death, is and remains extraordinary.”

Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sunday 23rd August, Mass: Saturday Vigil 5pm, Sunday 11am.
Peter can declare with certainty that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the Living God, because God himself had chosen Peter and prepared him for a new and unique vocation. Only God, with his “inscrutable” ways, could bestow on Peter such clarity in the midst of the many false claims about the identity of Christ. Christ begins to use Peter as an instrument—a Vicar—by which the Lord will open heaven to the world: “He shall open, and none shall shut”. All that Peter is and does is from Christ, “For from him and through him and to him are all things.”

Sunday 16th August
The Solemnity of the Assumption
of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Mass: Saturday Vigil 5pm, Sunday 11am

Pope Benedict XVI wrote that “precisely because Mary is with God and in God, she is very close to each one of us. While she lived on this earth she could only be close to a few people. Being in God, who is actually within all of us, Mary shares in this closeness of God.” She “knows our hearts, can hear our prayers, can help us with her motherly kindness. She always listens to us, and, being Mother of the Son, participates in the power of the Son and in his goodness. We can always entrust the whole of our lives to this Mother.” Assumed into heaven, Mary reveals our own destiny. As Msgr. Ronald Knox said: “That transformation of our material bodies to which we look forward one day has been accomplished—we know it now for certain—in her.”

Friday 14th August Mass 10am

Saint Maximilian Kolbe
Maximilian Kolbe was born in Russia-ruled Poland to a young labourer and his wife in 1894. Mary appeared to the ten-year-old Maximilian and offered him two crowns: a red one for martyrdom and a white one for purity. He chose both. As a young Franciscan friar, his passion for Mary was expressed in the Militia of the Immaculata, the worldwide movement of Marian consecration he zealously spread through a print apostolate. In February 1941, he was arrested by the Gestapo and eventually sent to Auschwitz. There he offered to take the place of a fellow prisoner sentenced to the starvation bunker. He died as a “martyr of charity” on 14th August 1941.
