Chatham Unitarian Church

Chatham Unitarian Church We welcome everyone who prefers love to hate. We are people of all faiths and none. We fight on for social justice, animal rights, our one environment, and hope.

We are a community of seekers. We are a family of friends. We are Unitarians.

Kent and East Sussex Unitarians KESUU met up at Dover Church on Saturday. Rev. Daniel Costley led worship on the theme of spring and renewal with some great songs by Unitarian hymn writers! Over seven years ago KESUU dissolved when a minister was appointed to service the five churches in Kent but this shared ministry came to an end. Renewal was in the air when it was agreed over coffee and cake afterwards that we would resurrect KESUU. We will meet again at the Autumn Equinox in Hastings and invite the other East Sussex churches to join us for an afternoon of fellowship, encouragement and mutual support. Thank you to Dover for hosting us; we hope and pray that you will be able to work out an arrangement with Dover Council to enable you to continue to worship in your unique, grade 2 listed, octagonal chapel.

Hope it is not too late to remind you that there is a service this afternoon at 3pm. It will be an informal 'cafe' type discussion around the subject of Spirituality and what it means for you. We are using course material from the Every Day Spirituality workbook produced by the General Assembly many years ago. Is the spiritual something you only encounter in a place of worship, or can it be found in the broader context?

Hope to see you later.

Great program for the Interfaith Week of Prayer for World Peace here in Medway. A good meet up today to launch the week. Tomorrow at Medway Hospital there will be a service to mark Memorial Day at 10.15am. War is an ugly thing. It damages everyone and everything. How can we bring about peace? I found this story by Kurt Kauter

Thus spoke the Maribou
“Tell me the weight of a snowflake,” a robin asked a dove.
“Nothing more than nothing,” was the answer.
“In that case, I must tell you a marvellous story,” said the robin.
“I sat on the branch of a fir, close to its trunk, when it began to snow… not heavily, not in a raging blizzard… no, just like in a dream. Since I did not have anything better to do, I counted the snowflakes settling on the twigs of my branch. Their number was exactly 3, 741, 952. When the 3, 741, 953rd dropped onto the branch… nothing more than nothing, as you say… the branch broke off.”

The dove, since Noah’s time an authority on the matter, thought about the story for a while and finally said to herself,

“Perhaps there is only one more person’s voice lacking for peace to come to the world.”

Chatham was represented at the march for Climate Justice in London on Saturday along with many other Unitarian congregations. Sadly this peaceful demonstration by many concerned citizens on the life or death situation facing the world received very little attention in the media. Neither peaceful protests nor the destruction of property seems to mobilise the politicians in this election campaign to take climate change seriously. So do we just lay back and let the destruction of our home continue? As long as there is power for our video games, I guess we will. Are we entertaining ourselves to death? Fiddling while Rome burns?

We hosted a well-attended coffee morning to get to know our neighbours at Lighthouse, the Turkish cultural centre two doors away. Here we are, brandishing the 'love your neighbour' pins that Hanna Yaffe gave out at the FUSE weekend. Lively chat, plus arrangements to meet again soon, added up to an enjoyable morning for everyone. Building bridges is faith in action; which reminds me of the story Hanna told on the weekend!

I took a wrong turning on my way to the Festival of Unitarians in the Southeast (FUSE) at the Friary in Aylesford Friday and, what should have been a simple journey, became a two hour adventure as I ended up going east on the M20 until Faversham and then crawled in rush hour traffic on the A2 until I could gain the M2 and start again. I was looking forward to regaling other Unitarians with my travel woes, until I heard the trials of our guest speaker who had come from Israel. I am glad I continued, despite the temptation to go back home, but even more glad that Hanna Yaffe continued her journey, via Budapest, to share with us stories and rituals from the Jewish faith. Unitarians, in a very Catholic setting, appreciating the traditions of yet another faith...all held in the warm embrace of God's love.

The Probation Payback Team did a splendid job cutting the grass and clearing the weeds. Sad to do it, but it does make the church look used and less vulnerable to vandals. However, many of the flowers made it into church for our Flower Communion on Sunday. Thank you, Sandra, for the wonderful display of colour!

We recently hosted architecture students from Kent University who mustered at the church for talks on local issues and who were then taken on a tour of the Intra area to see possible locations for buildings to be centres of health and well being. The church is grateful to Bryan and Sandra Fowler for organising refreshments and to Cafe 64 for the loan of equipment.
