NEW LIGHT for ancient church
Modernising the wiring and lighting system at St Nicholas Church, Charlwood.

The regular five-yearly test of the church electrical system carried out in 2015 stated that complete rewiring of the church was urgent.
The current wiring and light fittings installed sixty years ago are in a dangerous condition. There are safety hazards to the public and a risk of fire. If rewiring is not completed before 2020 we may have difficulty in maintaining our insurance cover and the future of the Church would be uncertain.
Since April 2015 we have visited many other churches to study their lighting systems and we have appointed a professional advisor to guide us. The design we are planning to implement is based on a number of pendants, each with six lights, supplemented by spotlights to light the main features such as the alter, the pulpit and the font. A switch near the door will enable visitors to illuminate specific historic features such as the Norman arch, the wall-paintings and the medieval screen.
The total cost of the complete rewiring and the new lights will be around £120,000.



One of the pleasures of living in a village is to have an ancient church at its centre. But this will only continue if many people in our community and beyond contribute to this Appeal. So please give as generously as you can, and as this Appeal will remain live for some months you can always spread several donations over a period of time to make the cost more affordable.
