What a buzz about the church last night as families came down to register. We know it was not as busy as previous years due to Registration being available on line now but nonetheless it was great to see you all.

So many new faces and we are really excited to welcome you to the 5th Carrick BB Family.

Congratulations to our Silver Duke of Edinburgh boys who have this weekend completed their qualifying expedition in the Mournes. Thank you so much to the leaders of First Kilbride Boys Brigade for making this possible for our lads. Congratulations to all of the boys from Kilbride and Fifth Carrick who did brilliantly this weekend.

Following the Duke of Edinburgh practice Silver Expedition, it was felt that the boys needed some additional training in navigation. Thanks to Joel (Kilbride BB) and Paul (5th Carrick BB) for organising two nights taking the lads out and doing some training around Cave Hill in Belfast.

We are excited now as the boys head this weekend on their qualifying expedition for their Silver Award. We want to wish them all the best for the weekend.

Thanks to 1st Kilbride for facilitating this for our boys and to all the volunteers going out this weekend.

We are also pleased to welcome Johnny Reid as a new leader in 5th Carrick and he will be joining the group on Saturday and Sunday. We know our boys will quickly get to know Johnny moving forward.

From our Captain on A Level Results Day - Thursday 13 August 2026

Looking back to August 1992 (yes I really am that old!) and I opened my envelope to discover I had got the following A Level Results -

Computing - B
Mathematics - E
Chemistry - U

My dream of going to Queens University was dashed in an instant and I was gutted. I felt that my world was ending as my Careers Teacher told me I would never get into Queens University to study Computer Science and I would need to settle for a course in Portsmouth Polytechnic (as it was called then) as that was all my grades would let me achieve. I was gutted and felt worthless.

I did not want to move to England as I was a home bird!

Looking back at that day in 1992 I can see God had a different plan for my life and everything worked out just as He planned it. To my shame I did not see it at the time and you too may not see it when you open that envelope but if you take advice from an 'old man' like me - do not be discouraged and be proud of what you have achieved whatever that may be.

Your future is bright and God will make a way as he guides you in life.

I'm forever grateful to the BBC Careers Advice Helpline that existed back then and a very knowledgeable adviser in England offered me significantly better advice than my School did whose only advice was to go to Portsmouth.

I was encouraged to speak to Queens and apply for Level Zero in clearing (what a foundation year was called back then) and Queens Accepted me! Yes I did have to do an extra year and resit pure and applied maths but I eventually got into the course I wanted to do.

If you open that envelope on results day and you get the results you need then a massive congratulations and well done!

If you open that envelope and (like me) your heart sinks then remember one day and one set of examination results does not define you as a person. Take a moment to take stock, do not panic and seek professional careers advice from your school or other sources. Schools have got better at careers over the years thank goodness and back in my day it appeared to be any teacher with free periods on their time table offering poor advice!

I think I did ok for myself even with my unexpected A Level Results and results day does not and will never define who you are as a person. There will always be a way for you to move forward no matter how you feel when you open that envelope today.

We're praying for all young people getting results this week. May God guide you as you make decisions as to what your future holds.
