"The Lord shall preserve you from all evil." (Psalm 121:7)
The Psalmist says that God will preserve us from evil, in fact, he says that God will "preserve thee of all evil", not some evil, not the occasional evil, but ALL evil. It does not matter what nature the evil is, how strong it is, what source it comes from, or how many times it crosses our paths. And it doesn't matter whether it is the evil that exists within us or the evil that is without.
The Lord will help us overcome evil within. We have a promise in Jude 24, "Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory, with exceeding joy."
But the Lord also indicates that He will preserve us from evil without. The Lord taught us to pray, "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil" (Matthew 6:13). That evil can come from opposition and antagonism against godly things and godly people like we are witnessing in our world today. It can come to us in the form of satanic attack, sickness, persecution and many more things, but the Lord has promised that He will preserve us from these.
Maybe you're thinking "Hold on a minute, this is a staggering promise. Are we really to believe that no harm will come to the believer? God's people have suffered, been enslaved, imprisoned, killed, persecuted, could it be the Lord has failed? No God's promises never fail.
So what does it mean? We must think on the sense of the word, "preserve." The meaning here can also mean, guard, watch, or keep." Moreover there is a future sense to this word as well as present tense. Therefore understand and be assured that at every moment, God is watching over us. God is with us even in times of hardship and suffering. God is keeping us, even though we are experiencing difficulties. Furthermore, God will ultimately take away all suffering and sorrow.
Psalm 71:20 affirms, "Thou that hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shall quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth." Nothing in heaven or earth can take away the life that we have in Christ. This is how goodness and mercy can follow us even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death.
Amen. Blessings ๐.
