Christ Church Carnforth

To contact Fr Ryan, email [email protected] or call 01524 651986. For well over a century Christ Church has been the spiritual home for countless numbers of people who have sought God. It has shared in the joys and sorrows, the ordinary and the extraordinary in people’s lives and stands today as a testament to the historic Catholic faith proclaimed afresh in this and every generation. The fi

rst stage of the building was completed in 1873, it was enlarged in 1901 and the tower added in 1908-9. From the 1920s onwards the tradition of the parish has been firmly rooted in the Catholic tradition of the Church of England, with daily prayer and the Eucharist at the heart of all we do. The regular daily Mass times are below but please check the weekly bulletin or contact one of the clergy for further/up to date information of these and other church activities. Mass: Sundays 8.00 & 10.00 (sung), Monday 19.00, Tuesday 12.00, Wednesday 09.15, Thursday 19.15, Friday 09.15, Saturday 09.15. Holy Days of Obligation 19.30 (sung)

Morning and Evening Prayer daily. Confessions: currently by arrangement with the parish priest, and at times advertised on the weekly bulletin. [email protected]

Over the past few months, our church has sadly experienced several incidents of damage and vandalism while the building has been open during the day.

We are committed to serving our local community, and one of the ways we do this is by keeping our doors open for anyone seeking a moment of peace, prayer, or quiet reflection. It is deeply disappointing that this welcome has been met with acts of misuse and damage.

With heavy hearts, we have made the difficult decision to keep the church locked when not in use for the next few weeks, in the hope that this will help break the cycle.

We ask for your understanding and continued support, and we also ask that you keep those responsible in your prayers, that they may find a better path forward.

Have you ever wondered how the church chooses the readings we have a mass ?

WHY THE CHURCH USES YEARS A, B, C

Many people attend Mass every Sunday…
They hear different readings…
Different Gospels…
But few ask:
Why does the Church arrange readings this way?

The church uses a three year cycle and each year is labled Years A, B, and C?

1. WHAT ARE YEARS A, B, C?
The Church follows a three-year cycle of readings, designed to present the life and teachings of Christ in an ordered way.
* Year A → Focuses mainly on the Gospel of Matthew
* Year B → Focuses mainly on the Gospel of Mark
* Year C → Focuses mainly on the Gospel of Luke

2. WHAT ABOUT THE GOSPEL OF JOHN?
The Gospel of John is not assigned to one single year.
Instead, it is used during:
* Major seasons (Lent & Easter)
* Important feasts and solemnities
This gives deeper theological reflection on Christ.

3. WHY DOES THE CHURCH USE A CYCLE?
The goal is simple:
* To expose the faithful to a wide portion of Scripture
* To avoid repetition of only a few passages
* To guide believers through the life of Christ step by step

4. DOES THIS HELP us READ THE BIBLE?
Yes, powerfully.
Through regular Mass attendance:
* We hear the Old Testament
* Psalms
* New Testament letters
* Gospels
Over time, this cycle presents a large portion of the Bible in an organised way.

5. WHO ESTABLISHED THIS SYSTEM?
The modern three-year cycle was expanded after the Second Vatican Council to deepen the faithful’s engagement with Scripture.

6. WHY NOT JUST READ RANDOM PASSAGES?
Because the Church is not random.
She teaches with order and purpose:
* Each Sunday builds on a theme
* Each season reflects a mystery (Advent, Lent, Easter)
* Each year deepens understanding of Christ.

IN SUMMARY… THE CHURCH TEACHES WITH STRUCTURE
Year A → Matthew
Year B → Mark
Year C → Luke
John → Key seasons

This is not just reading…
It is formation.

Today, reflect:
“Am I just hearing the readings… or following the journey?”
…and let the Word of God grow in you.

Did you decide to become a Christian at Easter or are thinking more deeply about it?

Here's some suggestions of what to do next:

1. Read one of the four Gospels. These are the eyewitness accounts in the New Testament of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Mark's Gospel is the shortest and can be read in one go.

2. Pray. Prayer is talking to God. It doesn't have to be eloquent - in fact simple is better! One simple prayer is "Jesus I trust in you"

3. Attend Mass regularly. Being around other Christians and hearing the Bible read out and taught is one of the main ways we deepen our faith. Our Sunday Mass is at 10:00am.

4. Talk to a Priest. He will help you with you next step which might be Baptism, when water is poured over your head in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit which marks your new birth and entry into the Church. If you've already been baptised, maybe as a baby, you could start preparing for Confirmation where the Bishop prays for you and lays hands on you to give you strength to walk in the path of Jesus Christ.
