Report from the Carmarthen Book for Facebook
Fourteen members met in person on the morning of Thursday, 19 October, to discuss the book of the month ““A Terrible Kindness” by Jo Browning Wroe. This was a very memorable book – we hesitated to say enjoyable as it was difficult to read in part, especially at the beginning when the central character, William Lavery, newly qualified as an embalmer, goes to Aberfan to care for the children killed by the landslide. William is a flawed character, traumatised by events both in childhood and early adulthood and unable to build bridges with those he felt he has hurt, but he is eventually redeemed by helping others. This is a ‘Book Club’ book – few of us would have picked it up but it was put forward and, as we read it, we found it was a good book with many layers.
The book for November is “The Silent Patient” by Alex Michaelides. Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer. She lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and she shoots him in the face and then never speaks another word.
Members are asked to note that we will only have a short discussion of “The Silent Patient” as Christine Davies, author of “Trecadno” will be coming to give us a talk on writing this, her first book, which has been described as “suspenseful and side-splitting … a minutely observed portrait of rural Welsh life, a portrayal as affectionate as it is playful”.
All the best
