Celebrating 800 Years of St. Francis

This October Franciscans across the world are marking the 800th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi.

Born into wealth and privilege, St. Francis chose a radical path of joyful poverty, peace-making and love for all creation. Eight centuries on, his witness continues to inspire Christians seeking a faith that is humble, hopeful, and courageously lived. St. Francis is particularly well known globally today because he is the patron saint of the environment.

On Sunday 4th October, the feast day of St. Francis, local members of the Franciscan Third Order, known as TSSF, are celebrating with a commemorative Walk of Peace, Hope and Reconciliation through the town of Carmarthen.

People from all local churches, denominations, faiths and none are warmly invited to join us. We will commence our walk from St. Peter’s Church at 2:00pm; walking then to the former site of Greyfriars in the town centre for prayers and a blessing by Bishop Dorrien Davies, before walking on to Christ Church Hall to enjoy fellowship and refreshments, ending about 4.30pm. After this, those wishing to join us for our service of the Franciscan Office will be most welcome.

The Greyfriars were members of the Franciscan order, who arrived in Carmarthen during the 13th century and established a friary just outside the then medieval town walls on what is now the site of the Greyfriars shopping area. Archaeology has shown it was among the largest provincial Franciscan friaries in Britain.

Today, membership of TSSF is for lay and ordained people, single or partnered, who feel drawn to the Franciscan way of simplicity, joy, peace-making and care for creation. Join us for our walk on 4th October, enjoy the chance to chat with others and learn more.

The final organ recital in this year’s summer series is at 1.00pm on Tuesday 1 September and will be given by Thomas Howell, a brilliant young organist from Neath who graduated with first class honours from Birmingham Conservatoire this summer.

Thomas has previously served as Organ Scholar at Chichester Cathedral and parish organist of English Martyrs’ RC Church in Sparkhill, Birmingham, and he has won a number of prestigious organ competitions and prizes in recent years. He is now starting to build a freelance career in London, as well as taking up the position of Assistant Director of Music at St Leonard’s Church, Streatham, so don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to come and hear him play in Carmarthen.

Entry to the recital is £5.00 on the door and includes tea, coffee and cake after the performance, with the opportunity to meet and talk to Thomas.

The overall proceeds of the recital series help us to meet the regular tuning and maintenance costs for the significant historical organ at St Peter’s, so we continue to be very grateful for your support.

We are delighted at how many people have been coming along to enjoy this year’s series of summer organ recitals. The next recital is at 1.00pm on Tuesday 25 August and will be given by John Walton.

John hails from Lancashire and is a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music. In the past, he has held organist positions at Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan and Standish. He retired to New Quay in 2019 and gives regular lunchtime recitals at Tabernacl Chapel there. John played for us as part of both the 2024 and 2025 summer recital series, and his programme this year will range from J S Bach through to the present time, including one of John’s own compositions.

Entry to the recital is £5.00 on the door and everyone is very welcome to stay and socialise over tea, coffee and cake after the performance.

The overall proceeds of the recital series help us to meet the regular tuning and maintenance costs for the significant historical organ at St Peter’s, so we are always very grateful for your support.

We were delighted with another very good attendance at the second organ recital in this year’s lunchtime series and now look forward to welcoming Meirion Wynn Jones back to give his second recital at 1.00pm on Tuesday 18 August.

His programme this time will be very different from that for his first recital, but will still cover a wide range of musical styles beginning with Handel and moving through to works by the well-known French organists and composers Charles-Marie Widor and César Franck.

Everyone is very welcome to stay and socialise over tea, coffee and cake after the performance.

Entry to the recital is £5.00 on the door and the proceeds help us to meet the regular tuning and maintenance costs for the significant historical instrument in our care, so we are very grateful to all those who come and support these very enjoyable events.
