Dear friends in Christ,
This week we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord on Thursday, a Holy Day of Obligation when we should attend Holy Mass to the best of our ability. It is an important solemnity to celebrate since it recognises the end of Our Lord’s earthly ministry and the beginning of a time of prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit in nine days at Pentecost.
Mass times are as follows:
Wednesday 7pm Vigil Mass
Thursday 8am Mass and Pontifical Mass 12noon
This is where the Church gets the custom of praying for nine days, a novena, for a particular intention. I encourage you to find your own novena for Pentecost or say this prayer asking for a renewal of the Holy Spirit every day starting on Thursday until Pentecost:
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, and thou shalt renew the face of the earth.
Next Saturday (31st May) we have another exciting event taking place, the Jubilee Family Funday on the Abbey lawns. The day begins with Holy Mass at 11.30am being celebrated by Archbishop Mark. Then is the opportunity to enjoy the picnic which you have brought with you on the Abbey lawns. Tea, coffee and squash will be available as well as outdoor games, a bouncy slide, information stands and a Pilgrims’ Treasure Hunt. It will be a fun-packed day for all the family!
My prayers and best wishes,
Father Augustine
