Thought for the week: Clean on the outside, but what about the inside?

This weeks thought of the week is inspired by one of those chores we often put off doing... cleaning the kitchen cupboards.

From the outside the cupboards often look fine...but the inside tells a different story,
spilt flour, sticky rings from jars and plenty of other little messes

It is a great reminder of Christian life.
We can look really clean and presentable on the outside, really
'polished' to other Christians
- but God looks on the inside.

So despite having a clean, good-looking Christian life on the surface, what goes on within our hearts and behind closed doors is what truly matters to God.

So the encouragement for this week is simply to assess your Christian life
– to look honestly at any areas of sin,
any areas where forgiveness is needed,
any areas that need to be worked on
so that you can be
truly presentable before God.

Thought for the week: Is it really that simple?

We all have favourite verses in the Bible; the one above is taken from the New International Version of the Bible.
One of many different translations and interpretations of “The Good Book”.

In the popular TV show
‘Father Brown’, based on the book by G K Chesterton,
an inquisitive & sometimes slightly naughty Catholic priest is the seeking of redemption for lost souls.

G K Chesterton’s story “The Sign of the Broken Sword” father brown declares
‘When will people understand that it is useless for a man to read his Bible unless he also reads everybody else’s Bible’

There are many versions of the Bible, many varied interpretations and even more commentary’s written about it.
The Bible is a guide, a tool we Christians use alongside prayer, worship & loving one another as we live our lives

However Father Brown warns us that the way each of us approaches the Bible differs and there is a danger that passages can be taken out of context & used to support and justify any act or creed, good or bad:
read the rest of the paragraph from G K Chesterton & you will learn why

For some faith can be simple.
God is good & the Devil is Evil,
often taught from childhood.

In any situation we know right from wrong.
Sometimes we are lost or discouraged in our faith.

Let us pray for guidance from His Spirit and His Word to set us firmly back on the path of love:
love for God,
love of ourselves
and love for each other.

Amen

Thought for the week - Good news with no limits

Last week we celebrate Pentecost.
Acts 2 verses 4 tells us
That the disciples went out to the crowd and “all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the spirit enabled them”
And so began the telling of the Good News if Jesus.

They spoke in other languages and all the nationalities recognised their own language they recognised the power of the Holy Spirit.

Christianity is not limited to to any race or group of people.
Christ offers salvation to all people.
As Christians we have the power to spread the good news.

Let’s start in our own community.
Let us pray for Christians in other lands persecuted for their faith.

Thought for the week - Tired of trying?

We all experience weariness and sometimes feel overwhelmed with the responsibilities of the Christian Life.
It is full of challenges and sometimes we might feel tired, frustrated or even discouraged, especially when results are not immediate.

Yet Paul in this verse offers a promise :
"there is a harvest for those who persevere".

By embracing this message, we can find strength in our faith and support one another in our mission to do good, knowing that our labour is not in vain.
