The Scripture Root & Easter Hope

Yesterday, as we gathered for the Third Sunday of Easter, we sang a hymn born from one of the Bible's darkest passages. "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" draws its refrain directly from Lamentations 3:22-23 — words written by Jeremiah as he witnessed the destruction of Jerusalem. "His compassions fail not; they are new every morning." It is a remarkable thing to sing words of such stubborn hope during Eastertide, when we celebrate the ultimate proof that God's faithfulness outlasts even death itself.

Here is a beautiful detail: composer William Runyan was so moved by Chisholm's poem that he prayed earnestly God would give him a melody worthy of the words. The hymn sat quietly for decades until George Beverly Shea sang it at a Billy Graham crusade in 1954, carrying it to millions. It is now sung in churches worldwide — including our little congregation in Fairwater — a testament to how the Lord uses simple gifts offered in faith.

Whether you joined us yesterday or are reading this from afar, you are welcome here. All are welcome.

Come and see.

Join us this Sunday at 11am as we gather for our Elder-led Reading Service.

We continue our Easter celebration with the beautiful story from Luke's Gospel – two disciples walking the road to Emmaus, their hearts burning within them as the risen Christ drew near to teach them. It's a gentle reminder that Jesus still walks beside us in our questions, our sorrows, and our ordinary moments.

Whether you're visiting for the first time or returning after time away, you are welcome here. We gather simply to hear the Word, to pray together, and to find our hearts strangely warmed by his presence.

"Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked with us on the road, and while he opened to us the Scriptures?" – Luke 24:32

Grace and peace to you.

The shadows have lengthened and the candles have been extinguished.

This afternoon we gathered in solemn silence for our Good Friday Tenebrae service, hearing Christ's Seven Last Words and standing together at the foot of the cross. The silence was heavy. The hope felt hidden.

But Sunday is coming.

Join us this Easter Sunday, the 5th of April, as we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord. Our Divine Service with Holy Communion begins at 5pm, and all are welcome to come and see the empty tomb. Whether you walked with us through the darkness today or haven't joined us before, we gather as one family to receive the Good News: Christ is risen. He is risen indeed.

Grace and peace to you as we move from the shadow of the cross into the light of the Resurrection.

As we near the end of Lent, yesterday our elders led a gentle Divine Service, sharing a sermon prepared by Rev. George on death and the God who remains with us through every shadow. It was a sacred reminder that even in our hardest valleys, we do not walk alone.

You are always welcome to walk with us.

Grace and peace.
