We are grateful for the work of Cardiff Foodbank over so many years and glad to continue hosting a Foodbank session here each week!
Today is National Food Bank Awareness Day.
Cardiff Foodbank started in 2009 when a small group of people recognised a growing need in their local community, with many struggling to afford enough food.
Mark Tugwell, now Development Manager, and one of the trustees at the time, said: "We saw this as a call to action. The founders brought together a small group of friends to explore how we could respond to the need. That's when we connected with the Trussell Trust, and the charity grew from there."
The growth since that time has been significant. In 2022, after several years of seeing the need increasing, Cardiff Foodbank moved into its current 14,000 square foot premises near the city centre. Then, in 2025, Cardiff Foodbank, supported by more than 220 volunteers across eight food bank centres, provided 19,203 three-day emergency food parcels to people facing crisis.
While it is encouraging that National Food Bank Awareness Day exists to raise awareness and inspire support, it is also a reminder of a difficult truth. In Cardiff, and in communities across the UK, too many people still face the hardship of being unable to afford enough food and other basic essentials.
Emergency food will always remain an important part of what we do, we also believe that lasting change comes from addressing the challenges that cause people to need a food bank in the first place. That is why we are working to strengthen the support available alongside our food provision, helping people access advice, guidance and services that can improve their circumstances and build long-term resilience.
Food banks can be a lifeline, but they are not the solution. We remain committed to our vision that no one in Cardiff should go hungry and are continuing to develop and extend our services that help people find stability before a crisis develops. Will you join us?
Our website contains information on how to access support, as well as ways you can get involved by donating food, giving your time as a volunteer, or making a financial contribution to help people in crisis.
