Who owns the rain?
“What makes you think that we would willingly thirst to death, so that you can water the green lawns of Surbiton? Eh? If you can’t afford to water your lawns, don’t plant them and certainly don’t invade other ecologies to water them!”
The forced damming of the Tryweryn river by the English city of Liverpool in the 1960s – against the wishes of the Welsh politicians and the Welsh people – reawakened the desire for self-determination within the Welsh. Forty years on, it arguably led directly to devolution. In Water Wars, England invades Wales in order to appropriate its resources and in order to sustain its own ecology.
Water Wars is an eco thriller with great relevance for the communities of Wales.
Ian Rowlands is an internationally known playwright from Carmarthen. His plays include Marriage of Convenience, Troyanne, Love in Plastic, Blue Heron in the Womb, The Sin Eaters, Glissando on an Empty Harp and Aurora Borealis.
The production is fully bi - lingual and will use the Sibrwd translation app in collaboration with Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru.
Water Wars plays at the following venues in 2025.
Cardiff Atrium Tuesday 25th and 26th February

“You want our water because your eco-system’s fu**ed; from the Midlands south, your water table is so low, you’re sucking the glass dry with a straw; and it’s an ugly sound. And we feel sorry for you, we do. But we are tired of being screwed over for your desires, English. Our water sustains our own needs. Without it, our own ability to survive diminishes”

(Water Wars originally commissioned by National Theatre Wales and developed by the author and Cymru Theatr Pen in 2020)
Funded by the Arts Council of Wales and the National Lottery

Pwy sy'n berchen ar y glaw?
“Beth sy'n gwneud i chi feddwl y byddem ni'n barod i sychedu i farwolaeth, fel y gallwch chi ddyfrio lawntiau gwyrdd Surbiton? Eh? Os na allwch fforddio dyfrio’ch lawntiau, peidiwch â’u plannu ac yn sicr peidiwch ag ymosod ar ecolegau eraill i’w dyfrio!”
Roedd argaeau gorfodol afon Tryweryn gan ddinas Saesneg Lerpwl yn y 1960au – yn groes i ddymuniadau’r gwleidyddion Cymreig a’r Cymry – yn ail ddeffro’r awydd am hunanbenderfyniad o fewn y Cymry. Ddeugain mlynedd yn ddiweddarach, gellid dadlau ei fod wedi arwain yn uniongyrchol at ddatganoli. Yn Rhyfeloedd Dŵr, mae Lloegr yn goresgyn Cymru er mwyn priodoli ei hadnoddau ac er mwyn cynnal ei hecoleg ei hun.
Mae Water Wars yn ffilm gyffro eco sy'n hynod berthnasol i gymunedau Cymru.
Mae Ian Rowlands yn ddramodydd adnabyddus yn rhyngwladol o Gaerfyrddin. Mae ei ddramâu yn cynnwys Marriage of Convenience, Troyanne, Love in Plastic, Blue Heron in the Womb, The Sin Eaters, Glissando on an Empty Harp ac Aurora Borealis.
Mae’r cynhyrchiad yn gwbl ddwyieithog a bydd yn defnyddio ap cyfieithu Sibrwd mewn cydweithrediad â Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru.
Mae Water Wars yn chwarae yn y lleoliadau canlynol yn 2025.

Canolfan y Celfyddydau Aberystwyth 4ydd a 5ed Mawrth

“Rydych chi eisiau ein dŵr oherwydd mae eich eco-system wedi gwirioni; o dde Canolbarth Lloegr, mae eich lefel trwythiad mor isel, rydych chi'n sugno'r gwydr yn sych gyda gwellt; ac mae'n sain hyll. Ac rydyn ni'n teimlo'n flin drosoch chi, rydyn ni'n gwneud hynny. Ond rydym wedi blino o gael ein sgriwio drosodd am eich chwantau, Sais. Mae ein dŵr yn cynnal ein hanghenion ein hunain. Hebddo, mae ein gallu ein hunain i oroesi yn lleihau”
(Water Wars a gomisiynwyd yn wreiddiol gan National Theatre Wales ac a ddatblygwyd gan yr awdur a Cymru Theatr Pen yn 2020)

💭 Ranters Theatre: Belief System 💭

Belief System is a sculptural sound installation that invites you to immerse yourself in people's intimate, profound and humorous beliefs.

Grouped into flocks that whisper from the speakers and flow above and around you, the piece builds mesmeric rhythms and patterns that are controlled using data from a weather station on our roof.

This unique exhibition is free to visit, everyday day from 11am-5pm until this Saturday!

-

Mae Belief System yn osodiad sain gerfluniol sy'n gwahodd chi i ymdrochi yn gredoau agos-atoch, dwys a doniol.

Wedi'i grwpio i mewn i heidiau o'r seinydd sy'n llifo uwch ben ac o'ch cwmpas chi, mae'r darn yn adeiladu rhythmau a phatrymau mesmerig sydd wedi ei reoli gan ddata o orsaf tywydd sydd ar ein to.
