This year’s Archive Exhibition in the Chapter House showcases newly cleaned stone artefacts from the Archives. Some smaller stones are on display, and the larger ones can be viewed on a special Archives tour.

Llandaff Cathedral was pleased to work with students from Cardiff University’s MSc Conservation Practice course, who undertook their placement in the Archives, where they catalogued and conserved our historic stonework. The exhibition also explores the longer history of the Cathedral and its development through the centuries.

Saturday 12 September, 10am to 4pm, in the Chapter House.

Former choristers will return to Llandaff Cathedral on Saturday 12 September for a special Evensong bringing together generations of singers who have passed through the Cathedral Choir.

For some, it will be a chance to meet old friends and revisit familiar surroundings. For others, it will be an opportunity to take their place in the choir stalls once again and sing in the Cathedral where they first learned the choral tradition. The service will include music by master composers of the Anglican Choral Tradition, including Stanford and Wesley.

The service is open to everyone, with the public warmly welcome to attend Evensong at 5.30pm.

After the school summer holidays, Llandaff Cathedral’s choristers, back row and choral scholars resume the daily round of rehearsals and sung services in our stunning setting. We will also be welcoming new choristers and new choral scholars to our fantastic team of singers.

The role of our musicians in leading the liturgy involves hard work: maintaining existing repertoire, learning new music, preparing the settings, hymns, psalms, canticles, responses, and anthems that mark both the church’s seasons and festivals, and often commemorate events of national and local importance.

As Canon Ian says, “Among the concentrated learning is also great satisfaction, huge privilege, and above all, I hope, a very real sense of service, belonging and fun.”

Choral Services recommence on Sunday 6 September at 11am and 4pm, and then each weekday at 5.30pm. Our congregations and the public are warmly invited to support the endeavours of the Cathedral Music Department as the Dean and Canons lead the singing of God’s praises, and pray for the world, Wales, and the city of Cardiff, in which we live and work.

Meet Toby, our new Ordinand

“Hello, my name is Toby, and I am the new Ordinand at Llandaff Cathedral. I am 24 years old and have recently arrived from Aberystwyth, where I spent six wonderful years studying Geography at undergraduate and postgraduate level, while also working for a church.

I grew up in Portsmouth with my twin brother and younger sister. My passions include playing and watching sport, especially football, as well as hiking and board games.

I am really looking forward to getting started and to getting to know all of you during my placement.”

Toby is already getting to know the Cathedral and will formally begin his placement from St Padarn’s Institute on Sunday 20 September, when he will be introduced to our congregations.

Lady chapel window – Flight into Egypt

In 1908, the Archdeacon of Llandaff offered to pay for the refurbishment of the walls and ceiling of the Lady Chapel, and, in consultation with F. R. Kempson, the Cathedral Architect, the Dean and Chapter engaged Geoffrey Webb to decorate the chapel. The contract with Webb for the work was signed in April 1909, with a specified completion date of November of the same year.

Webb subsequently produced for the Dean and Chapter, in agreement with Kempson, a design scheme for the six side windows of this chapel and discussed a design for the glass in its East Window.

Geoffrey Webb’s rebus, a spider’s web, appears in each window in the Lady Chapel in various forms.

In the window on the right, which is the westernmost in the south wall, the main subject is the Flight into Egypt, the figures of which are, like those in the other windows on the north and south sides, five feet high. In the left-hand light, Our Lady is seated on a donkey, bending over her Child, whom she has wrapped in a cloak for travelling. He is shown here at about the age of one year.

In the right light, St Joseph walks beside her, holding his bag of carpenter’s tools in his right hand and his staff in his left.

The subject depicted by the smaller figures in the base of these two lights is the Marriage at Cana in Galilee, shown as an interior that forms the frame for the figures. These figures show Our Lord seated on the left, pointing to the six water pots before Him, one of which is held up by a servant. In the right light, the figure of Our Lady is seated at a table, with a scroll above her head bearing the last words recorded in the Gospel as spoken by her: “Quodcumque dixerit vobis, facite” (“Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it”) (John 2:5).

The Llandaff Art Group returns to Llandaff Cathedral this summer with its 2026 exhibition, bringing a week of painting, drawing and creativity to the Lady Chapel from 29 August to 4 September, open daily from 10am to 4pm.

Following last year’s successful exhibition, the group will showcase a selection of recent work, with visitors also able to watch live drawing sessions, join guided walkthroughs and see artists working in the Cathedral.

There will be something for younger visitors too, with a children’s table where they can make their own artwork with family.

We’re pleased to welcome the Manchester Cathedral Voluntary Choir to Llandaff Cathedral this August Bank Holiday weekend.

The choir will lead worship across three services: Choral Evensong on Saturday 29 August at 5.30pm, Choral Eucharist on Sunday 30 August at 11.00am, and Choral Evensong on Sunday 30 August at 4.00pm.

Everyone is warmly welcome to join us.

This is the only accurate drawing we have of the late medieval Cathedral, published in Browne Willis’s early 18th-century book, before the south tower and nave fell into ruin. When the Victorians reconstructed the western end of the cathedral, they used this drawing as a reference.

However, the eastern end of the building is very similar to what we see today.

Cadw Open Doors – The Cathedral will once again be taking part in Cadw’s Open Doors event. This is Wales’ annual contribution to the European Heritage Days initiative, which invites heritage organisations, private owners, local authorities and others to open their doors or offer activities to the public free of charge.

Join us on Saturday 12th September for free guided tours, an archive exhibition, an organ demonstration, and the chance to explore the Cathedral tower.

From the Archives: Stories in Glass

In the Teilo Chapel, at the east end of the south aisle, is the first window commissioned from Morris & Company. It was donated in 1866 by cathedral architect John Prichard and his sisters in memory of their parents. The Victorian restoration of the Cathedral was not yet complete when the window was installed.

The centre light, designed by William Morris, depicts Christ the King, shown full-face, crowned and robed, holding an orb in His left hand and raising His right hand in benediction. The left-hand light contains the figures of St Elizabeth and the boy John, designed by Ford Madox Brown, while the right-hand light shows Zacharias wearing a white and gold cope lined with red over mauve vestments and holding a censer in his left hand, by Morris.

The two quatrefoils above are also by Morris, while the original glass in the trefoil at the top has been lost and replaced with a typical example of George Pace’s leaded-light design.
