From the Archives: Stories in Glass

The final Morris window was installed in 1874 in the opening immediately north of the pulpitum, and is probably the most accomplished of the set of five windows here.

The left-hand light shows St Simon as a full-length figure viewed full face, with a fish in his left hand. Below is The Miraculous Draught of Fishes, depicting two disciples with Christ in a boat, above another disciple in a second boat in the right foreground, with a net stretched between the two boats.

The centre light contains St Peter holding a golden key, with, below, Christ Walking on the Water.

St Jude is the main figure in the right-hand light, shown full length and carrying a ship. The scene below represents St Paul’s shipwreck.

The three full-length angels in the tracery are from designs by William Morris.

Gosodwyd y ffenestr Morris olaf ym 1874 yn y bwlch yn union i’r gogledd o’r pulpud, ac mae’n debygol mai hon yw’r fwyaf cywrain o’r set o bum ffenestr yma.

Mae’r ffenestr ar y chwith yn dangos Sant Simon fel ffigwr llawn, wedi’i weld o’r tu blaen, gyda physgodyn yn ei law chwith. Islaw ceir, ceir darlun o dau ddisgybl gyda Christ mewn cwch, uwchben disgybl arall mewn ail gwch yn y blaendir ar y dde, gyda rhwyd wedi’i thynnu rhwng y ddau gwch.

Mae’r ffenestr canolog yn cynnwys Sant Pedr yn dal allwedd aur, ac oddi tano, Crist yn Cerdded ar y Dŵr.

Sant Iŵd yw’r prif ffigwr yn y ffenestr ar y dde, wedi’i ddangos yn llawn ac yn cario llong. Mae’r olygfa islaw yn cynrychioli llongddrylliad Sant Paul.

Mae’r dair angel yn y traceri yn seiliedig ar ddyluniadau gan William Morris.

From the Archives: Stories in Glass

The window in the North Aisle adjacent to the Mathew Tomb and the pulpit was the next Morris window to come to Llandaff in the following year.

« TO THE MEMORY OF EDWARD STEPHENS ESQ FOR MANY YEARS DEPUTY REGISTRAR OF THIS DIOCESE HE DIED THE 2ND DECEMBER 1861 AGED 71 YEARS. »

The left-hand light depicts St John the Baptist with, on his staff, a scroll reading « Ecce Agnus Dei » (Behold the Lamb of God). Below St John is a half-length figure of an angel with an organ. The centre light shows Moses carrying the tablets of the Law above a William Morris figure of an angel playing a dulcimer.

In accordance with convention, Moses is depicted with horns. This arose due to an error in translation of part of Chapter ###IV of the Book of Exodus, in which we are told that as Moses came down from Mount Sinai, « the skin of his face shone ». The Hebrew for « shining » is capable of two interpretations and, in the Vulgate, the « horns » version was used.
The right-hand light depicts St Paul in a blue cloak lined with pale gold over white patterned with gold. William Morris again provided the design for the half-length angel playing a pipe below St Paul.

Morris window with Christ in the centre

It was John Pollard Seddon, John Prichard’s architectural partner between 1852 and 1862, who provided the link, through his brother Thomas, which brought the Pre-Raphaelites into the restoration at Llandaff. Five windows were to figure amongst the legacy of this association all of which were saved from destruction in 1941 by the « Friends » initiative in having them stored.
These windows were made by Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. between 1866 and 1874 using designs by Ford Madox Brown, Edward Burne- Jones and William Morris himself.
