The 'Jumbo' was a small, open sail boat specifically designed in the mid-1880s for the St Ives inshore fishery. Unique to St Ives and somewhat ironically named due to their size, those seen in the harbour today and this video are replicas of the smallest recorded. They were researched and built by Jonny Nance based on the designs of St Ives’ best-known builder, WILLIAM PAYNTER (1837–1930), one of which bears his name.

Jumbos varied in size - larger than a pilot gig but smaller than a pilchard driver. Introduced near the end of our fishing heyday, they had a relatively short working life but remain part of St Ives thanks to the work of the St Ives Jumbo Association.
