On the 10th of September of every year, the World Su***de Prevention Day is observed. This annual, international campaign aims to raise awareness, reduce su***de rates, and share effective ways to take action both as individuals and members of the community.

This year’s theme is ‘creating hope through action’, which emphasises the role of working together to show people who are experiencing suicidal thoughts that there is hope that we care and support them. It also illustrates that no matter how big or small the action, it may provide hope to someone who is struggling.

As members of the community, we can all participate in this by educating ourselves on how we can support those around us. There is no single solution or response, so the literature on this is vast. This is something that, as a society, we hope to promote by instigating more discussion around mental health at our own events and creating an environment in which people are comfortable discussing their thoughts and feelings.

As always, it is helpful to reflect on our values by using examples from Sikhi. Today's theme focuses on hope, so we would like to use a lesson from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji that whilst we are taught to place our hope in Vaheguru, we also believe that every being has the essence of Vaheguru within them. As Sikhs, we should aim to help every person as though they are our own brother or sister 🩵

Today marks the Joti Jot (the soul immersing with the Eternal Light) of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji (the sixth Guru). Guru Ji continued the Guruship for 38 years.

After the Shaheedi (martyrdom) of Guru Arjun Dev Ji, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was the first Guru to engage in warfare; Guru Ji established the concept of 'Miri Piri', spiritual and temporal power, highlighting that all Sikhs should be spiritual whilst also standing up against injustice and tyranny.

The term 'Sant Sapahi' was created, meaning Saint Soldier.

Let us remember Guru Ji by continuing to stand up against oppressive regimes whilst also immersing ourselves in Gurbani (Guru's teachings).

Dhan Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji Maharaj!

Today marks the Joti Jot (the soul immersing with the Eternal Light) of the 2nd Guru, Guru Angad Dev Ji.
The word 'Angad' means limb. Guru Angad Dev Ji's name was initially Bhai Lehna Ji. Guru Nanak Dev Ji considered Bhai Lehna Ji as one of Their limbs, in that there was no difference between them. That's why Guru Nanak Dev Ji gave Bhai Lehna Ji the name Guru Angad Dev Ji.

By the command of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Angad Dev Ji compiled the first Sikh prayer Sri J*p Ji Sahib. Guru Ji also formalised the sacred script of Gurmukhi. Guru Ji continued the Guruship for 13 years and contributed a total of 62 Saloks (hymns) to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Today marks the Gurgaddi Divas (Guruship) of Guru Amar Das Ji Maharaj.

Today we celebrate the Gurgaddi Divas (Guruship) of Guru Amar Das Ji Maharaj, Guru Ji was bestowed with the Guruship after devoutly serving Guru Angad Dev Sahib Ji Maharaj for many years.

Upon seeing Guru Ji on the throne, the son Guru Angad Dev Ji, Datu, became so jealous and kicked Guru Ji. Guru Ji’s utter humility meant that They were worried They caused pain to Datu’s foot. After this incident, Guru Ji left for Their native village, Basarke and locked Themselves in a room engrossed in deep meditation.

The Sangat requested help from Baba Buddha Ji on the whereabouts of Guru Ji. Using their antardhian, Baba Ji came to know that Guru Ji was meditating in Basarke. The Sangat saw that the horse belonging to Guru was still in Goindwal. By untying the horse, it led the Sangat all the way to their Master.

When they arrived, Guru ji placed a sign outside Their door warning anyone who entered would not be regarded as a Sikh of the Guru. So, lovingly, Baba Buddha Ji cut a hole through the wall on the other side and requested Guru Ji to give Darshan and show them the right path. Due to the Sangat’s tearful plea and devotion, Guru Ji returned to Goindwal.

The place where Baba Buddha Ji created an opening is now known as Gurdwara San Sahib.

Gurbani Says:
O Guru Amar Daas, Your Glorious Virtues are so sublime; Your Praises belong only to You. ||1||22||

The Sikh Society would like to extend everyone our best wishes today, marking the 'Sikh New Year'. Contrary to popular belief, this does not fall on Vaisakhi (April 13/14), but rather on the first day of Chet.

The 14th March coincides with the 1st day of the month of Chet in accordance with the Bikrami Calender. Marked also by the festival of Holla Mohalla, and the ascension of Guru Har Rai, let us come together as a reminder to reflect on our SIkhi, and instilling the values and principles of our Gurus.

To learn more about Chet, and the Sikh calendaring system more generally, check out the Everythings 13 - Basics of Sikhi of video linked below:

In this video, Bibi Gurprit Kaur guides us through the Bani of Barah Maha, introducing the first month, Chet. With Chet being the first month of the Sikh cal...
