WORSHIP:
Salvation Army places of worship are sometimes called ‘citadels’ or ‘temples’, but, whatever their name, they are Christian churches open to the community they serve and offering a warm welcome to all. Our meetings have a relaxed atmosphere and can include hymn singing, Bible readings, testimonies (people talking about their Christian experiences), and presentations by worship groups.

LEANING ON THE EVERLASTING ARMS

Today was a special day led by Majors Gary and Lorraine as we celebrated the enrolment of our two newest Salvationists.

During our prayer time, Lorraine reminded us that we are all loved by God. We reflected on the many milestones that shape our lives, from birthdays, starting school and new jobs to anniversaries, graduation and bereavement. Around the room were different milestone stations, and we were invited to spend time at the one that resonated most with us, bringing our own experiences and journeys before God.

Before their enrollment Thelma and John both shared beautiful testimonies. John thanked Olivia, the friend who first introduced him to the Army when he was at school and invited him along and it was lovely that Olivia was there today to see him enrolled. His testimony, written as a letter to God, was such a beautiful reflection on his journey of faith, his conviction and the many people who have supported him.

Thelma spoke honestly about a busy and distracted life, trying to do things in her own strength. She spoke of realising that God had never grown tired of her, but had loved her all along. When she came to the Army, she never felt lost or like a visitor; instead, she felt that the way had already been prepared for her.

Gary’’s message brought together the testimonies and the theme of our meeting, drawing on Deuteronomy 33:26–27 and the wonderful picture of God as our refuge, with His everlasting arms underneath us.

Gary reminded us that God is with us through every part of our lives. Not simply because it is a comforting idea that we have created for ourselves, but because this is who God is and this is His plan for us. Even when we feel unworthy, we cannot hide from His presence. His arms remain there to hold us up, whatever chaos or uncertainty we may find ourselves in.

He went on to remind us that God is always present, but sometimes we need to stop and recognise it. Using a biscuit factory analogy Gary explained Hedonistic Acclimatisation where we become accustomed to things once pleasurable and warned us not to get like that with our spiritual lives and become so accustomed to His presence and His love that we forget just how extraordinary it is. Today’s celebration gave us an opportunity to stop, shake ourselves out of that familiarity and recognise again the beauty, love and presence of God.

We were then asked if there were any promises we need to renew and whether there something God is calling us to commit to again?

What a privilege it was to share this milestone with Thelma and John. We promise to journey with them, to support them and to celebrate the milestones still to come, trusting together in the God who holds us all in His everlasting arms.

IT NEVER STOPS GETTING BETTER!
EPHESIANS 1

Majors Gary and Lorraine introduced a new series today which, over the coming weeks, will see us looking at Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. We were reminded that it is a carefully crafted and well structured letter, intended for a wide readership, for all who are united in Christ. We can praise that we can find our purpose in Him.

We calmed our hearts, as we sang the congregational song, ‘Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the holy one, is here’, welcoming the presence of Jesus in our midst, preparing to share together.

Prayers of intercession, using several portions of scripture, were spoken. We were thinking, whilst we were praying, of many situations and concerns in this country and internationally. In particular, we prayed for all those involved with the Big Church Festival, and the tragic events of Friday. We thought about the community in and around Middlesbrough with the unrest over the last week, acknowledging the tensions, anxiety, and fear. We prayed for our own community hub, where there have recently been some difficult situations to manage; complex needs with behaviour reflective of chaotic lives.

We prayed for peace, guidance and strength, remembering He is our refuge in times of trouble.

Gary brought the message and encouraged us to look around and thank God for those who are part of the church, giving praise every time we think of them. The work of redemption is our task to share and people look to us, as the body of Christ, not perfect but redeemed, and reconciled. We must pray God’s riches over others, and that they see in us, the body and fullness of Christ.

It was lovely to see everyone today, and we are already looking forward to next Sunday, as we will be celebrating with John and Thelma as they are enrolled as soldiers. We will be praying for them this week as they prepare for their exciting day. We would love to welcome you too, at 10.30!

MUSIC & CREATIVE ARTS SUMMER CLUB

What a fantastic morning we had with the children exploring music and creativity together!

We started with some fun warm-ups, helping us get our bodies and voices ready to make music, before enjoying some snacks and learning a couple of new songs.

We also heard the amazing Bible story of the parting of the Red Sea and thought about how God made a way where there seemed to be no way. The children then created some fabulous artwork inspired by the Bible story, painting their own versions of the Red Sea.

They also had the chance to play brass instruments. They learnt how to breathe and blow into the mouthpiece to get the best sound, and the importance of listening while playing. They even managed to play both low and high notes simply by changing the shape of their mouths!

A wonderful morning of music, creativity, learning and fun! We look forward to doing it again soon!

FAREWELL SUNDAY

Today we gathered for a special farewell meeting as we said goodbye to Ben, who is leaving to begin training to become a Salvation Army officer.

Majors Gary and Lorraine led us through a meeting centred around the journey of faith. We began by thinking about a picture of a train station and asking ourselves where we might be on the journey with Jesus. Are we relaxing, carrying some baggage, unsure where we are going, or simply waiting for the next stop? It was a simple picture, but a helpful reminder that wherever we are, Jesus is with us. He is the glue that holds it all together.

Lorraine encouraged us to reflect on our own life maps, recognising the good and difficult experiences that have shaped us, while remembering that God has been present throughout. “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion” from Philippians 1:6 was a fitting reminder for Ben and for all of us.

We had the opportunity to pray in groups for Ben, his family, his confidence and his journey ahead, as well as for our own church family and ministry before he shared his testimony which reflected on coming to Cambridge as a shy and broken 14-year-old looking for answers, and how God has led him through the years. There have been plenty of questions and unexpected turns, but he spoke of his trust that God’s path and timing are perfect.

We were encouraged by words from Divisional Leaders Majors Stephen and Lynley Oliver, who reminded us that following Jesus is a daily decision to show up, serve and be available.

Then, as Ben was handed his grandfather’s flag, there was a beautiful sense of generations of faithful service continuing. We sent him out singing “I’ll Go in the Strength of the Lord”, as he walked into this next chapter.

We thank God for Ben, for all he has given to our corps, and pray that God will guide, strengthen and use him in all that lies ahead.

GRACE THEN GROWTH
EXODUS 19:1-19

We were grateful to have Karen Anker lead our meeting today and there was a lovely hubbub as we came in, with friends catching up and the usual warmth of being together. But as Karen reminded us right at the beginning, although there are plenty of reasons why we come, first and foremost we are here to praise God, because he is worthy. And there is something powerful about doing that together.

Our theme this morning was “Grace Then Growth”, and Karen took us through Exodus 19, asking us to think about what it means to be saved by God’s grace and then to grow in our relationship with him.

We thought about how unsettled life can sometimes feel. So much around us can seem wobbly and uncertain, from disasters, society and government to the things happening in our own lives. Yet Exodus reminds us that God is completely different from anything else we know. He is holy, majestic and far beyond our understanding.

But this holy God is also the God who saves us by grace. We don’t earn it and we don’t deserve it. And then, having saved us, he gives us a purpose. We are called to be his people, to listen to his word, respond to it and allow him to shape the way we live.

Karen reminded us that there is no growth without responding to God. His grace isn’t the end of the story; it is where our journey begins.

Through prayer, Scripture and plenty of singing, we were reminded again of the amazing grace of a God who takes away our shame, opens heaven to us and invites us to offer our lives back to him.

What a wonderful reason to praise him, together.

Creative Arts Club

Come along for a fun morning of brass instruments, singing, arts and crafts, Bible stories and lots of creative activities!

The club is for children aged 5–11 and is completely FREE, but places must be booked in advance.

NOT ABILITY BUT AVAILABILITY
1 Corinthians 1 18-31

This morning we were led by Major Paul Cooper and began by thinking about the world around us and our need for hope. We were reminded through Romans 8 that, even when things feel uncertain, God is ultimately in control. We were also challenged to think about how we can “fill the world with glory” and hope as we sang.

We then had a Celebrity quiz which introduced us to a rather unusual connection between some famous names, from Mozart to Marilyn Monroe. They were all left-handed, which led us into the story of Ehud in Judges 3 who was a left-handed man from the tribe of Benjamin, living at a difficult time for the Israelites. Yet what made him different was something God used for a purpose. His story is only a small part of the Old Testament, but God used him to make a huge difference.

Paul asked us whether we have ever felt like the different one in a situation. Perhaps we’ve felt uncomfortable, looked at strangely or simply wondered whether we have what it takes. But the Bible shows us again and again that God doesn’t work in the way we might expect.

Paul reminded us that this isn’t a new idea. Throughout the Bible, God has chosen people who might not have seemed like the obvious choice. Moses was 80 when God called him. David was still a young boy when Samuel came looking for a king, yet God used him to defeat Goliath. Jesus chose fishermen as some of His first disciples, and shepherds were among the first to hear the news of His birth. Again and again, God shows us that He isn’t looking for the people we might consider the most qualified or important. He is looking for people who are willing to make themselves available.

The message today was was clear. God isn’t looking for perfect people with every skill, talent or qualification. He is looking for people who are willing to say yes.

We were reminded that we can spend so much time thinking about what we can’t do, but when God asks us to serve, our inadequacies don’t have to get in the way. When we make ourselves available to Him, He can use us — and ultimately, when we serve God, people don’t see us, they see Him.

So the challenge this morning was a simple one: What is God asking of you today? And are you willing to say, ‘Here I am, wholly available’?

Some of our amazing young people (and not-so-young people!) have been attending Summer Schools over the last few weeks, and we’ll be sharing more about all they’ve been getting up to very soon.

But for now, we wanted to share something happening today.

At EYSS, they’ve been stepping out, learning, challenging themselves and looking at the important issue of period poverty — something that affects far too many people.

We’d love you to join us in Wymondham this afternoon for their final celebration and to support all they’ve achieved. And if you’re coming, we’d also love you to bring along any new, unused sanitary products you might have at home. These will be collected to help support those experiencing period poverty.

It’s a simple way we can all play our part, and we’d love to see as many of you there as possible!
