Season of Creation: The "Hidden Thirst" of Artificial Intelligence

While we often think of technology as "immaterial," our digital lives have a very real physical cost. Current Artificial Intelligence models and the hardware supporting them consume vast amounts of energy and water, contributing to carbon emissions and straining the world’s natural resources. As we celebrate "Living Water" this season, let us reflect on how our digital consumption might contribute to the "tears of creation" and seek ways to live with greater digital sobriety.

Season of Creation: A Season for "Living Water"

As we begin the Season of Creation (1 Sept.-4 Oct.), we are invited to reflect on this year’s theme: "Living Water". Inspired by the prophet Ezekiel, we see a vision of a river flowing from God’s sanctuary that brings life to everything it touches. Our faith teaches us that the universe reflects the face of Jesus Christ; therefore, protecting our water sources is not just an environmental goal, but a duty born of faith and a matter of social, economic, and human justice.

Illegal settlements across occupied Palestinian territory have long been recognised as illegal under international law, a position recognised by successive British Governments.
Despite this recognition, every year produce from these illegal settlements, from boxes of dates to bottles of w**e, is sold in shops around the world, including here in Britain.
Together, we can send a clear message that we want our government to root Britain’s trade policy in respect for international law and human rights.

* CALLING FOR DEBT JUSTICE *

Many of the world’s poorest countries are being pushed into a deepening debt crisis, forced to make huge payments owed on loans from wealthy banks and hedge funds. 34 African countries allocate more money to servicing debt than to health or education. Countries have often paid back the debt several times over, but will never clear it because of extortionate interest rates. Cardinal Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla from South Sudan says, “When debt repayment takes priority over essential services, the poorest suffer most. A debt system that prevents vulnerable nations from investing in their people undermines justice, human dignity and long-term stability”. He appeals to us to show solidarity with prayer, and by urging the UK government to use its unique position decisively to fix the grossly unfair global debt system.
