On this day in history…

363 years ago today on the 17th of June 1663 Michael Hill, who is commemorated in the monument mounted on the east wall of the Manaton Chapel, died aged just 8 years old. Michael was the son of Frances Manaton and Michael Hill of Trenethick, near Helston, who married in 1654. We do not know why the Manaton family burial place at St Sampson’s was the preferred place for the monument and burial of Michael, rather than his home parish of Wendron, a considerable distance to travel in the 1600s. We can only imagine the grief experienced by Frances and Michael losing their first child. They would never have imagined that over 350 years later, we would be remembering their son on this day and that the monument they placed all those years ago would have been carefully restored.

The inscription on the monument reads:

Nere unto this place lieth the body of Micheal Hill, the eldest sonne of Michael Hill of Trenethick Esq who he had by Francis the eldest daughter of Sampson Manaton of Manaton Esq who depted this life the 17 June 1663.

“Strange, what newes this stone could tell
Of Saint turned angel Michael.
Stranger, that so high a Hill
sink so low a vault to fill.
Strangest, when my friends hence fleete
If two and all wee Hills doe meete.”
