Well- Butleigh Fete is coming up this Saturday, and the weather forecast looks to be a warm 23 ̊c and sunny, with no rain. Let’s hope for a great turn out. Butleigh has a great sense of community and of working together for the common good I think. This reminds me of an exhortation the Apostle Paul gives us: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” (Phil 2:3). I think the Fete exemplifies that in the way so many people genuinely work together as a team to make the event a happy and joyful occasion for so many in the community.

Thought for the week 3rd June

In one of my school reports a wise teacher said that I would do better if I thought before I opened my mouth. To my shame, it took many years before the advice began to sink in. Thank goodness social media hadn't been invented or I'd have been in trouble very quickly. "To everything there is a season", says the writer of Ecclesiastes (traditionally King Solomon): "A time to be silent and a time to speak." It helps a lot to listen and observe before speaking, texting, emailing or indeed posting online. But the second half of the saying reminds us that there are also times when it's necessary to say what we think, to offer advice and to have the courage to speak up for the truth.

If anyone in the village is finding the present heat oppressive, I recommend sitting in the church. In this weather it is beautifully cool

‘At the still point of the turning world’ wrote T S Eliot in Burnt Norton. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to be there in the middle of life’s rush? ‘Be still and know that I am God’ says Psalm 46, a Psalm that tells the reader that God is our refuge and strength. It pictures total disaster, mountains falling into the sea and the sea raging, an ultimate tsunami. We have not reached that point yet, though ‘the nations rage, the kingdoms totter’ sounds a bit like some of the things going on worldwide. The famous Dambusters March is used as the tune for a hymn by Richard Bewes based on this Psalm. Perhaps we could sing along to that or read Psalm 46 the next time we feel shaken by things and so find ourselves ‘At the still point of the turning world’.

One of the themes that has been coming around quite a bit of late in church services is that of ‘Light’ and more specifically the notion that Jesus is the ‘Light of the World.’ As we read in John’s gospel; “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Other bible versions have, that the darkness has not understood it, or mastered it, or grasped it; or using the old King James Version – comprehended it. Such is the light of Christ. Good news indeed when we consider some of the darker things that go on in our world.

Thought of the week

"To be honest" or "I won't tell a lie" - the phrases trip all too easily off the tongue. We probably hear such phrases several times a day, in radio or TV interviews, especially those with football managers and sports people. But even politicians often use similar phrases as a matter of course. When you think about it, it's worrying that anyone should feel they need to assure us of the honesty of anything they say. Shouldn't everything we say be honest anyway? The book of Proverbs contains much good advice on honesty. Chapter 19 v1 puts it pithily: "It is better to be poor but honest than to be a lying fool."

It is absolutely certain that I will never travel in an HS2 train (will anyone?). But an article about what the Bible tells us was Hezekiah’s (king of Judah 715-687 BC) attitude to a national disaster that would happen after he died made me think. Should it matter to us what happens after we have died? I would love to see my grandchildren happily married and meet my great grandchildren, but I cannot even visualise the culture in which they will have to live. There are huge cultural battles going on around us and that makes the future even more opaque. I have to trust that it is all in God’s hands and not mine, a very good thing too. But surely we need to strive to make the future better, even when it is no longer our future. What interesting questions reading the Bible raises!

In talking to folk who are retired, a number comment on how busy their lives still are! The days and weeks zoom by, full of things to do. And if you are still in the world of work, no doubt you are also pretty busy too. As such, I think we all need opportunities to slow down a bit, relax and recharge our batteries. In this part of the world, in rural Somerset we have access to many wonderful walks. Walks across fields, along lanes and in beautiful woodland. Woodland walks this time of year are a real treat due to the spring flowers and bluebells that so often proliferate and carpet the woodland floor. When on a walk I think we can mentally slow down, start to unwind and breathe in the tranquility and beauty, as we once again find balance and perspective in our lives. God’s creation is indeed beautiful and breathtaking, and a balm for the soul.
