Clean Air Day

Air pollution is associated with between 29,000 and 43,000 deaths a year in the UK. The World Health Organisation and the UK Government recognise that air pollution is one of the largest environmental threat to our health. The day promotes simple actions like reducing car idling, walking or cycling, and advocating for systemic changes to eliminate fossil fuel use in urban areas.

Sunday 21 June is Suffolk Day, a vibrant celebration showcasing the county’s food culture, heritage and musical talent. Delivered in partnership with local councils, cultural organisations and Suffolk Community Foundation, this year’s event promises a lively, family‑friendly programme across Angel Hill, Abbey Gardens, The Athenaeum and St Edmundsbury Cathedral. The free programme, 10.00am to 6.00pm, will feature a 'farmers’ market and street food on Angel Hill, community performances and heritage displays in Abbey Gardens. The day will conclude with a ticketed evening performance of a Suffolk musical and literary anthology, in the Cathedral. This “Suffolk Celebration”, being directed by Nick Hutchison, will bring together music, spoken word, dance and contributions from young people and local community groups, celebrating the county’s creativity and generosity. With strong community involvement, accessible activities, and a focus on what makes Suffolk unique, Suffolk Day 2026 aims to be an uplifting highlight in the county’s calendar. Rewilding your garden to encourage nature:
Damsel and dragonflies, frogs and newts will quickly become visitors to even a small pond. A pond in your garden will become a feeding ground for birds, hedgehogs and bats (the best natural garden pest controllers). It does not need to be big, an old washing-up bowl, a large plant pot, or a disused sink could all be repurposed as ponds. One key feature though is providing a way for creatures to get in and out (a stack of rocks/ stones would be a good feature for this).

More information and tips can be found here:

Rewilding your garden to encourage nature:
The BBC reported earlier this year, that the increase in the number of nest boxes being put up across Suffolk may be helping boost the swift population (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm2rk3zgd0go). If you have a wall that's at least five metres tall, with a clear flyway in front, then installing a box could see a swift moving in. Swifts migrate, feed and nest together so, if you have the space, multiple nesting boxes would be ideal. If not, why not encourage neighbours to put up boxes too. You can buy a pre-made box, or make your own.

A guide to how can be found here: https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/actions/how-build-swift-box

Save Our Suffolk Swifts says 504 boxes were used at 138 different locations in Suffolk in 2025.

Rewilding your garden to encourage nature:
Built without using mortar, drystone walls have many nooks and crannies, and it is these spaces that makes them so valuable for wildlife. Adding one to your garden provides a habitat for lichen, mosses and ferns grow on and between the rocks; mice and small mammals to hide in the gaps; bees visit the nectar-giving flowers that grow in less exposed areas; and frogs, toads and slow-worms shelter in damp crevices.

Rewilding your garden to encourage nature:
Planting wildflowers provides vital resources to support a wide range of insects that couldn't survive in urban areas otherwise. From a small single flowerpot to leaving your lawn to go wild. It all counts.

Wildflower seeds are available from our Eco corner in Church and more information and tips can be found here:

Whether it's a flowerpot, flowerbed, wild patch in your lawn, or entire meadow, planting wildflowers provides vital resources to support a wide range of insects that couldn't survive in urban areas otherwise. Have you been thinking about prayer?

A discipline of prayer changes the way that we think about our lives, because it creates new habits of heart and mind. Prayer opens us more deeply to the transforming grace of God. Not sure how to start? Resources are available on the Church of England website:

To pray is to make our hearts ready to experience the love of God in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Praying regularly will help us to develop a spiritual rhythm.
