Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, a season that calls us to prayer, repentance and renewal as we prepare for Easter.

On this day, Christians around the world receive ashes as a sign of our humanity and our need for God’s mercy. Ash Wednesday invites us to step back from ostentatious display, to look honestly at our lives and to return to God with humility. Lent is not about being seen to do the right things, but about allowing God to shape our hearts.

Bible reading: Matthew 6:1
‘Beware of practising your piety before others in order to be seen by them, for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.’

Prayer

Faithful God,
you see us as we truly are.
As we begin this season of Lent,
draw us away from outward show
and lead us into the quiet work of repentance and trust.
Teach us to seek you not for recognition or reward
but for the healing and renewal you alone can give.
Create in us clean hearts, O God,
and shape our lives by your love.

Amen.

Last Good Friday we started this prayer resource. It’s been up in church almost a year now. As each strand is secured around a nail, a prayer is said.
This weaves together a year of love and loss, worry and joy.
The balls of wool are still plentiful. Please message if you have prayers you would like us to include and we will continue to weave the heart through Lent until Good Friday.

Praying today for all who have lived and passed on in Christ. 🙏

‘One God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.’
(Ephesians 4:6)

Christian unity is rooted in our shared relationship with God, who is the Father of all people.

This verse reminds Christians that unity begins not with agreement or achievement, but with belonging. God’s presence surrounds us, sustains us and dwells within us, calling the Church into deeper trust and mutual care.

During the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Christians are invited to reflect on how recognising one God and Father shapes the way we relate to one another and to the world God loves.

Prayer

God our Father,
you are above all and through all and in all.
Teach us to recognise one another as your children
and to live in love and trust.
May your Church reflect your care for all people.

Amen.
