The clocks go back an hour tonight, which is always a sure sign that autumn is well advanced and November is on the way. A St Serf's team spent time today putting up the poppy cascade and the field of poppies, which over the last few years have become a local tradition at Remembrancetide.
On Sunday 9th November, the congregation will remember in prayer those who lost their lives as a result of war and also those who mourn them. The service will start at 10 am.
Remembering the sacrifices made in times of war is a mark of respect but an even greater and more meaningful mark of respect would be to work with determination for lasting peace between nations, in communities and in our own hearts.
"Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me" - a song written in 1955 for a children's choir that carries a serious message for grown-ups.

Yesterday marked an historic moment in the ecumenical life of the church in Scotland, as the Saint Ninian Declaration, affirming the friendship between the Scottish Episcopal Church and the Catholic Church was signed yesterday at St Mary's Catholic Cathedral and St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, in Edinburgh. The group paused outside 121 George Street to include the Church of Scotland in the celebration. The photo shows the Most Reverend Leo Cushley, Archbishop and Metropolitan of St Andrews and Edinburgh, Rev Fiona Smith, Principal Clerk of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and the Most Rev Mark Strange, Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, outside the Kirk Offices on George Street, Edinburgh.

The weeks between the 1st September and the 5th October are known as the Season of Creation. During this time we celebrate the wonderful gifts God surrounds us with, and we particularly bring into focus our responsibility for the natural world, acknowledging our desperate shortfall in that regard. We also acknowledge our failure to maintain the perfect balance that supports life, and grieve over appalling human rights violations, violence and war.
Long ago the prophet Isaiah said this:
"The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers; the heavens languish together with the earth. The earth lies polluted under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore a curse devours the earth, and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth dwindled, and few people are left. The wine dries up, the vine languishes, all the merry-hearted sigh."
Only through the grace of God, Creator, Eternal Word and Holy Spirit can we act to restore that balance.

It was such a great day of celebration yesterday for the feast of St Serf and the 120th anniversary of the present church building. The Rt Reverend Ian Paton, bishop of our diocese, celebrated the Eucharist, shared a thought-provoking sermon and enjoyed fellowship with the congregation. "The harvest is plentiful" we read in Luke chapter 10, and although the labourers may appear to be few, there are in fact many of them working quietly away, sharing the good news of Jesus Christ in the workplace, the gym and somewhere near you!
"Rejoice that your names are written in heaven" (Luke 10,20)

Today is St Serf's Day, and it's particularly special for us this year because our church building is 120 years old this month.
Legend tells us that Servanus (c.490 to 550), whose name means servant, founded a church and a small religious community at Culross, where he became Abbot. He is reputed to have rescued and cared for the infant Kentigern (Mungo) and his mother. In the 13th century a Cistercian abbey was bult on the site.
Some accounts suggest that Serf was a contemporary of Adamnan, who commissioned him to found a monastery on an island in Loch Leven. This connection may account for the dedication of the first site of Christian worship in Burntisland at Kirkton (now a ruin) as Serf OR Adamnan. We honour Serf’s early ministry in Fife, and are proud that our church bears his name.
