﷽ - الصــلوة والسلام عليك يارسول الله ﷺ
Urs of The Second Khalifa Hazrat Umar Al-Farooq رضي الله عنه
(26 Dhul Hijjah)
His name was Umar ibn Al-Khattab رضي الله عنه. His kunyah was Abu Hafs and his title was Al-Farooq, meaning “the one who distinguishes between truth and falsehood.” He belonged to the noble Banu Adi clan of the Quraish. His lineage meets that of the Holy Prophet ﷺ through Ka‘b ibn Lu’ayy.
He was born in Makkah approximately thirteen years after the Year of the Elephant. He accepted Islam in the sixth year of Prophethood at about the age of twenty-seven. Before his acceptance of Islam, Muslims faced severe persecution; however, after embracing Islam, Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه openly declared his faith and strengthened the position of the Muslims in Makkah.
The Holy Prophet ﷺ made special du‘a for his guidance, saying:
“O Allah, strengthen Islam through the one most beloved to You of these two men: Umar ibn Al-Khattab or Abu Jahl.”
(Jami’ al-Tirmidhi)
He participated in all the major battles alongside the Holy Prophet ﷺ including Badr, Uhud, Khandaq, Khaybar, and Hunayn. He was among the closest companions and advisers of Rasulullah ﷺ.
Many Qur’anic verses were revealed in agreement with his opinion, a distinction known as Muwafaqat-e-Umar. Among these were the command regarding Hijab, the Maqam Ibrahim as a place of prayer, and matters concerning the wives of the Prophet ﷺ.
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
After the demise of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq رضي الله عنه, he was appointed as the second Khalifa. His Khilafah lasted for 10 years, 6 months and 4 days. During his rule, the Islamic state expanded greatly into Persia, Syria, Egypt, Iraq and Jerusalem.
Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه established many administrative institutions including the Bayt al-Mal (public treasury), Islamic courts, police system, census records, and the Hijri calendar, which remains in use by Muslims today.
(Tarikh al-Khulafa; Al-Bidayah wan Nihayah)
He was renowned for his justice, humility and fear of Allah. The Holy Prophet ﷺ said:
“Indeed Allah has placed truth upon the tongue and heart of Umar.”
(Jami’ al-Tirmidhi)
In Dhul Hijjah 23 AH, Abu Lulu al-Majusi attacked him with a dagger while he was leading Fajr Salah. He remained alive for three days and passed away at the age of 63.
His Janazah Salah was led by Sayyiduna Suhaib Al-Rumi رضي الله عنه. He was buried in the blessed chamber of Sayyidah Aisha رضي الله عنها alongside the Holy Prophet ﷺ and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq رضي الله عنه.
May Allah be pleased with Sayyiduna Umar Al-Farooq رضي الله عنه and grant us the ability to follow his justice, courage and unwavering commitment to Islam.
