Bullington Church We are a small but faithful and welcoming congregation who treasure the heritage of the Book of Common Prayer in our medieval gem of a church. Come & see! St.

Michael & All Angels is now a chapel of ease to All Saints, Barton Stacey, but was originally a private chapel for the Lord of Bullington Manor and his workers, possibly in the 11th century. A Grade II* listed building of early English design, it is made of flint rubble with groins of ashlar. Much of it dates from the 12th and 13th centuries, including the chancel which was rebuilt in 1220. The tower houses three bells hung for change ringing, two of which are listed and are among the oldest in Hampshire (the oldest one dates from around 1399). After many years' silence, the bells were conserved and restored to full use in 2012. The work was carried out by Conservation Bellhangers Ltd, whose innovative approach to the project was described by English Heritage as “an excellent scheme”. The bells
The tenor bell (listed) is the largest and oldest of the bells, made by Joseph Barbor of Salisbury in around 1399. It weighs 5¾ cwt (= 46 stone or 292kg), and is 1.16m in diameter, measuring 58cm in height to the shoulder. Its inscription: “Sancta Ana Ora Pro Nobis” (Saint Anne Pray For Us) is the same as that of a bell installed in Wi******er College in 1393 by William of Wykeham. The other listed bell is the treble, which weighs 4 cwt (= 32 stone or 203kg). Its inscription reads: “Joseph Carter made this 1599“. Joseph Carter worked out of the Reading Foundry at that time, but subsequently bought the famous Whitechapel Foundry. This bell is 1.05m in diameter and 50cm high to the shoulder. The ‘newest’ of the Bullington Bells is second in size and pitch. It bears the mark of a bell caster from the Reading Foundry: “HENRY KNIGHT MADE MEE 1680”. It weighs 4 ½ cwt (= 36 stone or 229kg) and measures 1.10m in diameter, with a height of 51cm to the shoulder. The bells are numbers 1, 2 and 4 of a ring of four, in the key of C. They are ‘maiden’ bells, ie they have not been tuned since they were first cast, so they ring with the same sound that has been heard over the valley for centuries.

ALPHA COURSE
Where: All Hallows Church Rooms, Whitchurch
When: Tuesdays @ 7.45pm-9.30pm (26th Sept – 28th Nov)
Alpha is organised as a series of sessions over 10 weeks, giving an opportunity for discussions and conversations around faith, life and God. We are planning for each session to start with pudding and drinks to offer time to connect, relax and build friendships. We’ll watch a 30 minute film to explore issues of life and faith, and unpack the basics of Christian belief, addressing questions like “Who is Jesus?”, “Why and how do I pray?” and “How does God guide us?”. This will lead into small groups for discussions to give an opportunity for everyone to respond to the talk, hear from others and contribute their own perspectives in an honest, friendly and open environment. Everyone welcome. Free of charge. Register on Eventbrite.
