The Monastic produce shop is unique in that it sells only what is produced by religious communities in Europe. Benedict’s Rule makes provision for ‘ORA et LABORA’ Prayer and Work. The fruits of their manual work help to support the communities and provides an increasingly appreciative clientele with high quality goods. Countries of origin currently represented include France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Cameroon as well as the UK. Most of the products are imported directly from the producer, so making the goods on sale a unique and fascinating collection. The Bookshop at Buckfast Abbey is an excellent resource centre for the Christian community in Devon, England and beyond. In the range of books stocked, we try to reflect the broad spectrum of the Christian experience. Theology, Spirituality, Liturgy, Bibles and Children’s books are among the resources available. The Bookshop also sells gifts for religious celebrations such as baptisms, weddings, anniversaries, First Holy Communion, Confirmation and Christmas. We stock religious statues, pictures, crosses and repository items as well as jewellery, CDs and cards. The award winning Gift Shop forms part of the Westgate which presents an impressive entrance to the Abbey precinct. The design of the Westgate was influenced by the gatehouse of another medieval monastery, at Beaulieu in Hampshire. Its spacious, airy atmosphere is perfect for browsing the fascinating array of items on sale. As well as the famous Buckfast Tonic Wine™ the Gift Shop sells a wide variety of gifts, ranging from ceramics, glass and collectables to fragranced products such as pot pourri, balms and cosmetics. It also stocks a delicious selection of country wines, biscuits, fudge and preserves, produced in the West Country.
