BWPJC is a warm, inclusive community that celebrates diversity of attitudes, opinions, and practices. We need names of visitors for security purposes.

The Bristol and West Progressive Jewish Congregation recently celebrated its 60th anniversary. We are a lively congregation of approximately 140 households including family, single, student and associate members as well as friends. We are located in Bristol, and our members come from a wide area of the South West of England and South Wales and we are affiliated with the national Liberal Judaism mo

vement. Our Friday night services are on Zoom only and our Saturday morning services are mixed. If you would like to come to a service, please email us with your contact details to [email protected] and someone will get back to you.

The High Holy Days will soon be with us. We cannot wait to welcome you to Bristol and West Progressive Jewish Congregation for the High Holy Days!

We are a progressive synagogue affiliated to The Movement for Progressive Judaism and we warmly welcome all Jews to our services and our social gatherings.

This week we read Parashat Ki Tavo - "When You Come into the Land" - which opens with the ritual of bikkurim, bringing the first fruits of the harvest in gratitude. These pomegranates, growing near the Sea of Galilee, feel like a living illustration of that very moment.

We are now in Elul, the month of reflection that carries us gently toward Rosh Hashanah. A beautiful time to pause, give thanks, and look ahead with hope.

This week we read Parashat Shoftim, built around one of the Torah's most enduring commands - "Justice, justice shall you pursue." That repetition is deliberate. Jewish tradition teaches that how we pursue justice matters just as much as justice itself - a value that sits right at the heart of who we are as a Progressive Jewish community.

Of course, Hershey and Sasha have considered all of this and concluded that what they are pursuing this Shabbat is the sofa. We respect their decision.

This week we read Parashat Vaetchanan, which contains one of the most familiar and beloved passages in all of Jewish prayer - the Shema. A simple declaration, yet one that lies at the very heart of who we are as a community.

This is also Shabbat Nachamu - the Shabbat of Comfort - which follows Tisha B'Av and brings with it a message of hope and renewal. A timely reminder that after every period of reflection, comfort is never far away.

Shabbat Shalom, BWPJC!

This week we begin the Book of Deuteronomy with Parashat Devarim - Moses' farewell address to the Israelites, looking back on their long journey and forward to what lies ahead. It is also Shabbat Chazon, the Shabbat of Vision, as we approach Tisha B'Av this Thursday - a moment to pause and reflect.
