St Mary's Church, Henbury

St Mary's Church, Henbury St Mary’s is a welcoming, family church in the parish of Henbury, Bristol. Sunday Service 10.00am. WELCOME! See Lucie's article for fuller details.

Henbury parish is the largest in the Bristol diocese and includes the districts of Henbury, Brentry and Hallen as well as the Blaise Castle estate and the Mall shopping centre at Cribbs Causeway. On the outside, St Mary’s looks like a typical picture postcard parish church. On the inside you will find that we have removed some of the pews to create a platform and a more welcoming entrance. Our wor

ship is enhanced by our lively Director of Music, James, and our singing group. We would be delighted to welcome you to our main Sunday service which is:

10 am Family Communion

During term-time, our Junior Church led by our Children and Youth worker Lucie Hudson meet in the village hall (a large building adjacent to the church rented from a charitable trust) during the 10 a.m. service, joining the rest of the congregation in the church building for communion and the last song. We also have a children’s corner in church for younger children who wish to stay with their parents. After the 10 a.m. service people gather in the village hall for coffee, biscuits and fellowship. Sometimes we have Sunday lunches, either ‘bring and share’ or provided by our Mother’s Union. We organise regular social events such as outings to the theatre and day trips. Do come and join us and we look forward to meeting you.

The volunteer team were back today, documenting more gravestones.
We came across an unexpected inscription, which was unreadable until we used earth rubbing as a way to reveal what it said 'In loving memory of Frank Taylor who was killed by accidentally falling over the cliffs on Lundy Island'.
We also uncovered a memorial to Beatrice Frances Charlotte de Hochepied-Larpent, daughter of the 8th Baron de Hochepied, an English judge of Dutch decent. Beatrice is probably named in St. Mary's as her sister married Philip Napier Miles of Kings Weston House.

St. Mary's children heard about the exile of the Israelites in Babylon and the pain of separation Psalm 137 and yet learning God was with them everywhere Psalm 139. They made paper chains and then broke them up in church as symbolic of what happened.
