Reflections for Corpus Christi Year A from Deacon Vincent.
1st Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy 8: 2-3, 14-16.
We are reminded by Moses, how God tested the Israelites reminding them that God fed them with Manna when they were unable to prepare bread. It was at God’s word that food was provided and water from the rock when they thirsted. “Man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” God spoke and food and drink was provided. A precursor of what Jesus was to provide for our spiritual exodus from the trappings of this world to the life-giving Spirit of the Lord within us preparing us for the promised land with the Father.
Psalm 147: 12-15, 19-20.
A great gift of God has always been the finest wheat, and Jesus gifts us with finest bread for his body and wine for our drink as we journey towards our home with the Father. God is good not just in our bodily care but in our spiritual care. He provides everything we need for our journey.
2nd Reading from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians 10: 16-17.
Paul is illustrating the Unity that the Eucharist gives to the Community by the fact that it is the one loaf, the Body of Christ, that we take and the drink we share is it not the Blood of Christ. By this action we who are many become one in Jesus Christ our Lord. Paul emphasises the oneness that sharing Christ together unites us as Christ’s brothers and sisters we also become brothers and sisters through Him. We all make up the Body of Christ, his Church, so we are all one, each with a different task, but all of equal merit through Christ.
The Holy Gospel according to John 6: 51-58.
We have this electrifying statement from Jesus, “I AM the Bread of Life” It really sums up the true nature of the Eucharist. It is a God given gift for us, to nourish us on our journey to eternal life. Jesus goes on to attest that “Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him.” Those who participate, “have eternal life and I will raise them up on the last day”. We have clearly placed before us the whole concept of the Eucharist. This really is the Body and Blood of Jesus, and it entitles us to eternal life. We are truly blessed who share this oneness that Paul emphasises in the Second Reading, making us one in the Body of Jesus his Church. May our Eucharist make us more Christlike in our daily lives.
May we all be One in Jesus Christ our Lord.
